Why is Seal so under-rated?

Hey ya'll,

One of my favorite singers is Seal. I think his voice is so awesome. Yet, people with the same old - same old voices have so much more fame and get recknoized so much more. Where as Seal, someone with so much talent, is known only as "The guy who sang Kiss from a rose." He has some awesome songs. I think his cover of "Fly Like An Eagle" is 4 star, and better than the orignal.
I just don't get why people have not caught on to him.

It isn't fair..does anyone else feel he is under-rated BIG time? or is just me? eek

I don't think he's underrated so much as he's inconsistent. Great first album, okay second album, a good track here and there after that. For me, nothing he's done since his first album is as great as Crazy or The Beginning. He's got a great, distinctive voice but that only takes him so far.

He's banging a supermodel. That's far enough for me.

I agree that a lot of his output since the first album has been hit and miss, but it does seem that he gets overlooked or taken for granted. That seems to be the case with most real artists these days, though...definitely one of the most distinctive artists out there, IMO...

some of my favorites:

Violet
Bird Of Freedom
The Latest Craze
Colour
Touch
Human Beings
Don't Cry
Dream In Metaphors
Prayer For The Dying
Wild
State Of Grace
The Beginning
Future Love Paradise
Deep Water
Crazy
Blues In E

I also love his unplugged acoustic versions of these tracks...

he isn't underrated. he's under-productive and under-achieving.

jasonstar, I understand where you're coming from with this thread, and sometimes it does seem as though Seal doesn't get the props he deserves, especially in the U.S. At the end of the day, I don't give a crap if Seal wins another Grammy or has another multi-platinuim record or a 5-star review from Rolling Stone. He'll always be one of my favorite artists because I respect him as a writer, a musician and a vocalist. Dude has one of the purest voices out there. Yeah, sometimes I wish he'd be a little more prolific, but in reading some of his own posts from his message board, one can tell that he sincerely tries to put quality above quantity. Not quality as the media defines it, but quality in the sense of an honest, whole-souled expression.

nod
I was just grooving to this two nights ago. I listened to it straight through twice as I always do when I bring it out for rotation. I caught him in concert years ago and that just made me like him even more. He's a quality performer with quality material through and through. And Prayer for the Dying gets me every damn time. Oh and he can dress his ass off too.

That second album is classic for me. I envy him being able to work with Wendy & Lisa in addition to having Trevor Horn produce.
I can't wait to see him live. I'm gonna have to pick up that live DVD because he probably won't be coming to Ohio anytime soon.

I love knowing Wendy and Lisa are a part of his projects and Trevor Horn is the man. I sorta slept on Human Being. I think I was turned off by the album cover and then the video but when I finally listened to the song Human Beings without visuals, I really liked it.

Kiss from a Rose got played TO DEATH, which left a bad taste in some peoples mouths. Also, he seemed to get grouped into the whole adult contemporary scene, so I think alot of people overlook him as old folks music.

I love Seal, especially his 2nd album.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by your statement, but my first thought was WTF!

I'm sure he KNOWS he's black, but let's hope it doesn't matter to him. Let's hope that his singing style is how he truly is. If only we had more artists that just acted themselves - what a wonderful world it would be.

This is just an ignorant statement. Are you suggesting he "act" black?
Futhermore, what that would "acting black" involve? Sure, the dude was born in England, but his parents were Nigerian and Brazilian immigrants. You don't think he "knows" he's black???

Under Rated? I thought he was over rated.

I honestly that the his first album was/is his best. He never matched that quality. And on a few songs from his second album he is still gold (Bring it on and Prayer for the Dying).

Is it Trevor Horn,...is it Wendy and Lisa? Not sure.

Now was there another album he did with them or was it with Trevor that got shelved? Or was it a W&L album that got shelved?

I think W&L are absent on Seal IV but Trevor has produced all four albums. I gotta check out Seal IV. Even though it wasn't a big success I've heard good things about it.

Once you do..you will love it..It is Seal's best album ever (imo.)
Songs to check out on it are: Waiting For You, Get It Together, My Vision, Let Me Roll, Don't Make Me Wait and Get It Together (Reprise.) music
Some of his best and some of the best music to come along in awhile if you ask me.

What, he should wear a lot of "bling", add 4 Gold fronts to his mouth, and say, "know what I'm saying, aiight ?". Then will he be "BLACK" enough for ya ???
