The Purchase Experience Though I still buy music, I download, trade and cop mostly nowadays. The great part of music is in the actual purchase of a record though. Just looking through my collection, I can remember the moment I bought them, what I was experiencing in my life at the moment and what music I was really into.
So go through your record collection (or through your memory banks) and recall the moment you bought a certain album. Did anything interesting happen? *trade or first listen stories are allowed I guess. Prince (1989) Batman This was the second Prince album I bought. The first being Parade three years earlier. I was really disappointed with that album, I liked Kiss and thought the album would sound like Purple Rain. It was 1989, I was seriously in to Batman after seeing the movie. I had about 10 dollars in allowance money. I bought this cassette at what was once Sam Goody’s on 61st and 3rd ave in New York City. I no longer have the cassette, because I played it to death in my walkman. Graffiti Bridge was a major disappointment, even though me and my best friend at the time liked Round and Round. Yes, Batman is a major reason why I liked Prince.

hmmm.
i bought a used copy of "bad reputation" once when i lived in NYC, and the counterperson told me that joan jett dropped off that copy herself one day. she just walked in, didn't talk to anyone, dropped some copies of her old CDs on the counter, and walked out. it's a japanese import, too. thanks, joan!

Having been fan since 1984, my Princely fever was whipped up, first by two amazing albums, secondly by all the 12"s I was just discovering. Then Dutch Radio 3 played the single AND b-side to Sign The Times... and my fever intensified... I drove all the way to the nearest record store and got the album. I could not believe it! What an amazing packaging. I carefully stripped the record of it's heart-shaped sticker and then put it on... wow... I was SO bummed when the third song of the album had a scratch on it! So bummed out. So I cycled back and got a replacement. And the new album had it TOO! Cycled back and got my third copy... Then I just gave up... hehehe. Housequake of course was meant to be scratched but it got a very blue sixteen year old from Blaricum, Holland very confused for a bit, hehehe... Oh well, I got THREE huge sign The Times cover stickers... and the people of the recordstore felt so much for me they gave me their STT promo stand (the small one, alas...)

lilgish said: oh shit... my first listen experience with Batman? now that was not really a good one: I just had bought the CD during the day, eagerly anticipating the first spin. and in the evening I finally took a car ride with a cousin of mine, who was also a big Prince fan. so we blasted the music loud while driving, analysing and commenting all the new songs'n shit... but sadly not really concentrating on the traffic... and crash! when turning around the corner I bumped into another car... that costed about 2500 $ in the end... and it was the car of my mother... that didn't spoil my fun with the album though, which I still enjoy a lot up to this day. my cousin however isn't into Prince anymore and has drifted into really obscure musical genres... just hope that isn't my fault Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!
