i'll be grabbing that DVD set, but there are only so many new order anthologies one person can own. it's enough that i already have THREE B52s best-ofs, a man's gotta have some limits!

This is true. I'll be getting it just for the edits, if that's what's included. I think someone said it's basically all the 7" versions. I think if you combine all of their singles collections/best of's/box sets, etc. you get the perfect New Order comp.

can someone please explain to me the precise contents of Substance?
I was just listening to the Retro box-set and on disc 3 it has a Shep Pettibone mix of Bizarre Love Triangle, which is the exact same version on Substance, the version I know and love (and one of my all time favourite songs). On disc 1 of Retro it has what I now presume is the original version, but not nearly as satisfying. Perfect Kiss sounds different as well. So very confusing. If only Substance had some liner notes. I know the box-set has liner notes but I don't have access to them right now.

I know the box-set has liner notes but I don't have access to them right now. Substance collected all of their 12" single versions on Disc One and all of the 12" b-sides on Disc Two. Bizarre Love Triangle on Disc One of Retro is indeed the album version. Perfect Kiss is the extended mix on Substance and I believe the album version on Retro. It gets tough when you start dealing with 3 versions of the same song at times - the radio edit, the album length and then the extended version. Generally, I think New Order is best in their full length glory, so when I'm making my own Best Of, I always include the extended mixes.

It's funny. Whenever I start a New Order thread it's always about their new album or new this or that. I just like the 2 "New"'s together.

You probably have a lot of the best of it between the various collections/box sets you own. But still, it's hard for me to assimilate their work through their albums. I rarely put them on compared to my own personal set. And I think it's because I have their material in such varying sound quality. Other than Power, Corruption and Lies I only know their recent 2 perfectly. There are minor gaps that I have with most of their 80's albums.
