Legendary bands & artists that remarkably receive no criticism in the press The ABBA topic got me thinking, every 5 or so years it's time for yet another ABBA anniversary revival, yet another group of samey documentaries on them to be aired on primetime TV, or another damn award show ABBA medley performed by a bunch of current pop tarts. But unlike a lot of other legendary acts, I can't say I've ever heard any criticism of their music. And while I appreciate it for what it is, it's not the type of thing I'd choose to listen to on most occasions.
What makes them so untouchable? I've sort of noticed the same of Elvis Presley just over the last few years too. His legacy has been given a complete makeover in the nearly 30 years since his death. His later life troubles are barely mentioned anymore, or they're just a small footnote. Elton John & David Bowie's supposed "crap" periods have been looked over too, as far as I can tell anyway.

well, bowie's only made one or two records that could be largely argued as "crap", in a career that's spawned damn near 40 albums. i'm guessing he is cut a bit of slack as a result.

Joy Division/New Order have remained relatively unscathed. But it's because they've never made a crap album.

World (Price of Love) and Regret are both on Republic. And yeah, it's probably the weakest of their albums other than the transitional Movement. But Regret is my favorite song they ever did! I like Everyone Everywhere and Ruined in a Day quite a bit too. World in Motion is that football anthem.
