Music wise, 1997 was the shit in the hip-hop world. When That pop shit came out that was mess, garbage.

I can admit that I liked the entire "Middle of Nowhere" Hanson's album and the first Spice Girls album. But I thought the Backstreet Boys came out in 97 and NSync came out in 98?
Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

For me, '97 is where the 90's started to turn sour. That year, Puff Daddy released his solo album and rap music as we know it went down the tubes.

I'm not a big Puff Daddy fan but, in 97, it was all I could do not to get up and dance when "Mo Money Mo Problems" came on the radio. And the damn thing was on the radio all the time so, several hours a day, I was resisting the increasingly overwhelming urge to get up and get down with my bad self.

That song is so symbolic of 97 for me. Riding up to Charlotte with my future wife to see "Jam of the Year" (my first P concert) we must have heard that thing 50 damn times. It still makes me smile when I hear it.

Pretty much everything else that P Diddy did sucked.

The 90s were awesome. The music was good especially the ballads.

1997 was a watershed transition year. It was the year that grunge was offically declared dead, hip hop changed from hardcore gangsta rap, gangs, guns and 40 ounces after the deaths of 2Pac and Biggie Smalls to Cristal and bling bling, and teen pop re-emerged.

For me, '97 is where the 90's started to turn sour. That year, Puff Daddy released his solo album and rap music as we know it went down the tubes. Bands like Matchbox 20 and Third Eye Blind completely took any life out of what was left of the alternative movement. And then, you know, Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys took over the world. We still haven't recovered from these 3 trends in rap, pop and rock. Please, do not bring back '97.

I know that Matchbox 20 and Third Eye Blind were listed as alternative groups at the time, as well as Smash Mouth, but I thought all of those groups were far too mainstream to be "alternative." If anything, they represented the evolution of "lite FM" from being totally maudlin acts like Michael Bolton and Celine Dion to a slightly more edgy sound which is now classifed by Clear Channel et al as "adult alternative". This allowed radio program directors to play acts like Dave Matthews Band, Sister Hazel and Jewel on a regular basis. I remember the Wallflowers being played to death on these stations that year.

WOW. Good analysis. Yeah those old diane warren type songs that clogged up the very early 90's hit their climax with toni braxtons "unbreak my heart" in the mid 90's, which was the last "boltonesque" song of its kind barring few exceptions.

In the UK, spice were everywhere and britpop was getting a wee bit dull.

Damn right 1997 was the good year in music well in hip-hop and r&b. With biggie's album, plus Puff Daddy too and also Erykah Badu's debut album Lil Kim Crush on you remix, Mase, and Missy Elliot's debut too, and Mary J Blige Share my world with seven days song, and many more to think of. I felt that 1997 was the good year for R&B and hip hop that I putted together all the songs made that year on CD among I got a lot of 1996 and a few of 1998 songs.

But it was also a sad year too it was the year that Fox cancelled their good thursday lineup: Martin, Living Single, and New York Undercover (well to me the show ended that year when the producer killed off Michael Delorenzo's character Eddie)

Overall hip-hop died for me after 1999.

Damn I feel you -- I used to love NYUC! I was very mad when they killed Micheal and then it got real wack when they brought in Tommy from Martin and the white chick from In Living Color -- It was just too weird because they were both from a comedic backround -- Fox has been wack ever sice! disbelief

Me too. I was able to listen to the radio again and all I heard was Puff Daddy, Mase, and the Spice Girls. I joined the Marines that year and I when I graduated, Usher was everywhere with U Make Me Wanna. I have to say, I still enjoyed music then, even though I was wondering where Prince was but I found out he was touring with Jam Of The Year. It was one of the only years that I really enjoyed hip hop. I liked Puffy and Lil Kim and Biggie, though he died in March. Looking back kinda makes me feel old.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Was prince still promoting for Emancipation album that year? Remember that song Somebody Somebody played on radio early that year? It was a minor hit particularly on RB stations. That was my best song of that album.

AInt that the truth. I used to be crazy about Michael Delorenzo but he hasn't been too much since the show ended and I lost interest in him but he will always have a place within me. It is amazing that once Dick Wolf killed his character out of revenge of that salary walkout that Michael started a year earlier, I didn't realized that Michael had so many fans.
