"Old School" could be defined as at least 10 years out OR 20 years out. So I'll take a middle ground and define "Old School" as any albums released during or before 1990. In no particular order:

Boogie Down Productions -- Edutainment 11. The Beastie Boys -- Licensed to Ill 12. Run-DMC -- Raising Hell 13. EPMD -- Strictly Business 14. The D.O.C. -- No One Can Do It Better 15. I thought about it. It's not a matter of liking, it's a matter of experience. I wasn't a full-on hip-hop head until between the time the first joint came out and the time Raising Hell came out. Plus, Raising Hell had more of an impact than the first joint did. You can't be wrong either way. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

True, but that's when hip-hop was in its purest form. But there are so many eras in hip-hop, and it's gone on for so long, that it's hard to define "old school." Hell, with Soul music, Earth, Wind and Fire is considered "Old School," but the Platters could arguably be true "old school." Same with jazz. Coltrane could be considered "classic" jazz, but one could argue that Fats Waller is "true" old school. It really depends on your frame of reference. Cin-Cee, you strike me as being down with hip-hop from the very beginning. I, on the other hand, was down with "old school" (pre-album era) in the days of Sugar Hill Gang, but only vaguely. My main frame of reference is the mid-80's on. Good point tho. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I have read and listened to the stories of those who were there in the very beginning. But I have you fooled because "King Tim III (Personality Jock)" is older than I am! [Edited 8/9/05 2:08am] | |
