This whole thread is on something else, She's succesful because people like her music. just like anyone else who is succesfull. you can go on about how sony may have tried and got her singles high on the charts in th u.s, but 160 million people bought her albums around the world at regular price razz , who do u explain that?

Who's Ian?

You sounded like you were ready to pounce for me making a comment about Janet. Sorry if I misinterpreted.

I don't just bash her constantly. I have good things to say too. She's just really disappointed me lately. I used to love her, even up through "All For You", which most people seem to hate. Everything lately though, I just can't vibe off of.

Madonna, I haven't felt that kinda letdown with before. But I can feel myself turning against her sometimes too. I was pissed about the ticket situation on the last tour and especially that she didn't even play her hometown. I hated the way she promoted (or didn't promote) American Life. Most of it went directly against the kind of stuff she was singing about. Didn't like that.

Mariah, I'm not a huge fan of. I just like her. She makes me laugh. And I think she's talented and got some really good songs. I just jump to her defense sometimes because people can be so ruthless.

Bashing Janet when we're discussing Madonna or Mariah is just as much of a copout as suggesting Madonna's entire career is built on sex. wink But I'm leavin' this place soon, so who gives a fuck, anyway? lol

And I thought you, Ian, and TRON were the same people; clearly, I got another crazy orger mixed up with you guys, though.

Mariah is successful because she has a wonderful voice....catchy,radio-friendly songs that appeal to a wide audience...and a strong, supportive record label that makes sure her music is heard. But I agree with you, some of her albums are uneven.I consider her more of a "singles artist" anyway.

Yep. Badujunkie is just hating cuz she is a Janet fan and she knows that Janet will never sell records again after the superbowl incident.

I'm a he.

And Janet will sell at least two or three million of her next release...compare Damita Jo's totals to the Glitter soundtrack and smoke that.

They both sold about 2 million worldwide , neutral

hating on Mariah will not make Janet more succesful.

You know Bjork's Vespertine almost out sold "Glitter" that year! biggrin

ironically, it's when she started going the hip-hop route that things began to go south (creatively and commercially), aside from the occasional hot track. she traded in a time-tested, proven, loyal audience (adult contemporary) to a fickle, trend-mongering one (contemporary r&b/hip-hop).

.

I told my husband when she left Tommy, that the reason was that she wanted to act, dance and try to act like a hip hop... and Tommy didn't get his position because he was stupid... he KNEW that Mariah is a terrible actress, stiff as a board dancer (definitely no janet) and could never be hip hop, she just doesn't have it.
and I think THAT is the reason she and Tommy had a falling out. She says he was "so controlling" it is really because he knew she was focking up. and she did!

I am shocked beyond belief that she actually has a #1 hit. I really thought she was finished. But notice that this song sound a lot like the songs she was singing around the time of "Dream Lover"

1. Mariah can sing.

2. Mariah in one of the last of the masters of the 5 octave vocal range, a technique that could only be match by the late Minnie Riperton.

3. Mariah can at least write her own lyrics (catchy lyrics make great hit singles).

4. Mariah is sexy (especially for the legs & for that smile).

5. Mariah is THE female icon of the 1990's (equal to Madonna being THE female icon of the 1980's).

6. As far as world records in the music industry are concern, only Elvis, Michael Jackson, & The Beatles have better looking resumes than Mariah!

7. Mariah is multiracial!!!

8. Mariah's fan base is a mixture of people of a lot of different backgrounds (like the fan bases of Michael, Prince, Madonna, Janet, Kylie,.....well, you get the picture!).

If we're talking music BUSINESS, then Tommy was right to be concern!

But we're talking about a marriage, then Tommy & Mariah should have never became a romance couple in the first place. Mariah was still young at the time & she wanted to go hit the clubs (especially the hip-hop joints) as much as possible & be wild and loose with her peers (like her girlfriends & younger men). Tommy (being the older man with his conservative ways) couldn't really keep up with that.
