If people like it and buy it then I don't think her chart performances are misleading at all. Sure people do: Cheap gifts, a $0.49 free sample (you're basically giving it away at that price), etc. I think her chart performance is misleading between the price fixing and the payola Sony and Mottola (privately) were involved with in her case. He blacklisted her from the radio when she left Sony in 2001 (an embargo that was only lifted when he was replaced), so fucking the boss had its advantages. THANK YOU!!!! Somebody sees the light...but my only thing is, why NOW is she on top, after they changed the chart formula, she's still NOT boning Tommy Mottola (as far as we know)...and isn't it funny that she's doing so well the same year her payola-benefactor-cousin JLo has her first flop album? I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Why is she popular now? Because people are so starved for a voice and a melody that they'll actually listen to completely unoriginal, bland material like We Belong Together. Even if it's bland, IT IS STILL THE BEST THING ON CORPORATE RADIO! IDJ ran a smart campaign with this album. But don't think they're above the Mottola tactics and payola. The label gave away 25,000 free downloads of We Belong Together and counted them as sales in order to get the song to #1 a week earlier than it should have (Billboard has since altered its policy). Mariah is the biggest beneficiary of this sort of manipulation in chart history.

I still think "One Sweet Day" is terrible, terrible stuff. I'm sure labels will soon figure out that "selling" downloads for $0.01 each (which, unlike discounts on CD singles, loses them no money whatsoever) to boost their chart position is a viable option. You know this as fact? It's not hard to deduce that considering the glazed-over look she's had since the 2001 "breakdown". Half the time she looks like she's on lithium. It also explains why her voice has gone downhill since that breakdown. [Edited 8/14/05 17:29pm]

No. I haven't gotten any of her albums since whatever the 3rd one was called. And I don't even think I own them anymore. I like some of her songs and her as a person though. And I'm not a Madonna fam either. Bjork and Tori, maybe. Madonna, no. And don't act like Janet doesn't have that space cadet look too.

You do enjoy bashing Janet for some reason, though. I thought it might be your fam status, since I've never really seen any negative comments from you about Mariah or Madge.

Who's Ian? You sounded like you were ready to pounce for me making a comment about Janet. Sorry if I misinterpreted. I don't just bash her constantly. I have good things to say too. She's just really disappointed me lately. I used to love her, even up through "All For You", which most people seem to hate. Everything lately though, I just can't vibe off of. Madonna, I haven't felt that kinda letdown with before. But I can feel myself turning against her sometimes too. I was pissed about the ticket situation on the last tour and especially that she didn't even play her hometown. I hated the way she promoted (or didn't promote) American Life. Most of it went directly against the kind of stuff she was singing about. Didn't like that. Mariah, I'm not a huge fan of. I just like her. She makes me laugh. And I think she's talented and got some really good songs. I just jump to her defense sometimes because people can be so ruthless.

Bashing Janet when we're discussing Madonna or Mariah is just as much of a copout as suggesting Madonna's entire career is built on sex. But I'm leavin' this place soon, so who gives a fuck, anyway? And I thought you, Ian, and TRON were the same people; clearly, I got another crazy orger mixed up with you guys, though. [Edited 8/14/05 17:54pm]

And I thought you, Ian, and TRON were the same people; clearly, I got another crazy orger mixed up with you guys, though. You calling me crazy? Thanks! Just for clarification... TRON = Gangstafam = Nathan Moonbeam = my brother Ian And Mariah, Madonna and Janet all make themselves easy targets. There's also a lot to like. The reason Janet frustrates the most out of the 3 is that she's fallen the furthest for me. I can see why anyone would be disappointed with all 3 of them though.
