Abraham Lincoln

O.K. eye don't have a full understanding on why Prince is deciding 2 add things in his music about Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Jefferson. Growing up eye thought of Abe Lincoln as one of my heros. Along with JFK, Martin Luther King N especially Malcolm X. Along with many others. Now, this is not 2 say that eye agreed with everything they said R believed in. But what Abe did is done. Can't turn back the clock N change it. Dig? People R going 2 B racisit no matter what. That is just the heart of man without God. R just being plan IGnoRanT! Many of R 4fathers of this country were Racisist. N many people R racisist 2day. N guess what, they will B 2morrow. Dig? So what's up with Prince N American HIStory 101?!! Anyone...anyone...Ferris?

PEACE N B WiLD!!

Ive hesitated to comment on this in the past because I realize that Prince used the line "Abraham Lincoln is racist" for sensationalism and to stur controversy.Look,Abe is a safe target...he is dead. He cant respond (not that he would). Historically,Lincoln had been reluctant to come to this position of freeing the slaves. A believer in white supremacy, he initially viewed the war only in terms of preserving the Union. As pressure for abolition mounted in Congress and the country, however, Lincoln became more sympathetic to the idea. On Sept. 22, 1862, he issued a preliminary proclamation announcing that emancipation would become effective on Jan. 1, 1863, in those states still in rebellion. Although the Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery in America--this was achieved by the passage of the 13TH Amendment to the Constitution on Dec. 18, 1865--it did make that accomplishment a basic war goal and a virtual certainty.
If Prince's point is that Abe was racist...no argument. The end result was that Abe chose to write the Emancipation Proclamation out of concern for the Union...which set in motion the idea of freeing the slaves. Hence the credit he gets that he freed the slaves. The 13th Amendment made Abe's Emancipation Proclamtion ideas into law.

dgtlctzn, thank U 4 the education. N redrider808, U stated the obvious. if it did'nt happen of course things would B different. But eye believe it would not B that different. the abolishment of slavery would have eventually happened in this country not 2 far from when good ol' Abe did it.
