Michael McDonald:thoughts? Warners/Rhino has just released "The Ultimate Micheal McDonald" and there seems to be at least a light promotional push for it, probably due to the success of "Motown". I bought "Motown" because of the hype and wasn't overly impressed. Now this collection, which features one of the better tracks from "Motown" with his hit cover of "Ain't No Mountian High Enough" showcases his pleasant upbeat pop rock with a heavy dose of keyboards. I wouldn't say that he is one of my favorites, but he is good. I don't think I've ever seen his name mentioned here. What are people's thoughts on his solo work along with his Doobie input.

I've always Loved Mike, although I wasn't too crazy about all the Motown stuff, either. I love his original stuff though, as well as stuff he did with the Doobies, and background vocal work with Steely Dan, Chistopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, etc.
His 1993 album 'Blink of An Eye' is my favorite, a Funky, soulful all-star affair that the public slept on, unfortunately..... anyway, my favorite MM tracks: with the Doobies: Open Your Eyes Minute By Minute Dedicate This Heart What A Fool Believes Real Love Nothin But A Heartache How Do Those Fools Survive Here To Love You There's A Light It Keeps You Runnin' Solo: Everlasting Blink Of An Eye No More Prayin' Sweet Freedom Our Love I Keep Forgettin' Losing End You Show Me Hey Girl You Can Let Go Now You Can't Make It Love ... So far, I must say that I loved his work with the Doobie Brothers over the years. Also, I have enjoyed a great deal of Micheals solo material. Some of my favorite songs by Micheal were: I Keep Forgetting, On My Own(Duet W/Patti Labelle), and Yamo Be There(Duet W/James Ingram).

I always liked him--with and without the Doobies and most of his collaborative efforts. I bought the Motown album also but only for 1 or 2 songs that I liked. I'll probably get The Ultimate collection too. My life's soundtrack is not complete without some Michael McDonald. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I just listened to "The Ulitmate Collection" the entire way through and while the first half is full of really good well known tracks, the second half is a bit lack luster with lesser known filler. The only standout there is "No Love To Be Found" because of the great female vocals.

Lifetime ghetto pass Damn right!!! And like I said before in past thread, Michael McDonald (as a vocalist) is THE blackest sound white man ever! And I feel that he has done a great justice in the world of traditional R&B & Soul without question! [Edited 8/11/05 21:57pm]

Michael's got some serious soul.. but for the ultimate MM collection, buy the Doobie's "Minute By Minute" Grammy winning album with some jazz/funky keyboard jams.. His voice is incredible. I saw him with Hall and Oates last year, and he simply killed "You Are Everything" and "It Keeps You Runnin." I don't like most of his pop 80's hits, but I guess he had to make a living. His background vocals on Stelly Dan's "Aja" album also make the soul cut. ______________________________________________
