I'm trying to wrap my brain around the concept of Tori doing a cover of YMCA! Just the concept makes me giggle! Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

Last night's show at Jones Beach was better than the NYC Hammerstein Ballroom show earlier this year. "The Beekeeper" sounded positively eerie. Even songs I don't care for like "Liquid Diamonds" sounded good last night. Loved her cover of "With A Little Help From My Friends" even though she did fuck it up at one point. Amazing.
The full setlist thanks to The Dent Original Sinsuality Little Earthquakes Amber Waves Pretty Good Year Marianne Jamaica Inn Cool On Your Island With A Little Help From My Friends (Beatles cover) Imagine (John Lennon cover) Barons Of Suburbia Jackie's Strength Liquid Diamonds Carbon The Beekeeper 1st Encore Cloud On My Tongue Silent All These Years 2nd Encore Never Seen Blue Hey Jupiter Two problems, however with the show overall. 1. Jones Beach is a little too big for a stripped down, intimate Tori show like this one I feel. A slightly smaller venue would have been better. 2. Why was Tori so far back on the stage? The big distance between her and the audience also took away from the closeness that I thought this type of show was supposed to generate.

i will be back with a better post in a few hours but i just walked in the door and need to take care of a few things. let's just say that i'm dying to know if she actually does do "my request" for total eclipse of the heart! (actually i asked for condition of the heart but she misheard me.)

the show was great!
after spending the day with my family (yikes!) and looking at prospective law schools, the show provided a much needed chance to relax, celebrate, and catch up with an old friend! i met up with my old pal, Dana, and we had a great dinner at Pigou, a french restaurant in the city. after eating we headed to the train station to begin what would become the hour long trek to jones beach. the trip required a subway, the LIR, and a bus! this is how you know i'm a tori fan...a bus! sassy don't do the bus very often, let alone a bus that gets on a highway. we get to the venue and make our way to our 5th row seats. as perfect as that sounds, the tech people decided to put a camera man between the stage and the first row...directly in my line of vision. i could not see the piano or organs at all. very salty. as usual, however, i handled my business and arranged for different seats. (translation: we jumped up into the 4th row and moved slightly to our left in order to be in better eyesight.) Dana tends to be a nervous person by nature so for the first few songs she was clearly concerned about us losing our seats. i had to reassure her several times and i think somewhere around amber waves it began to work. the show was great! i kind of expected to hear more from the beekeeper but nonetheless, the setlist was great and, once again, different from the others i've been lucky enough to catch. liquid diamonds and little earthquakes were the gems of the night for me! it was also nice getting to hear hey jupiter as the last song of the evening. that song just fits so well as a farewell for the evening. the only real problem i had was with the crowd. i'm sorry...i hate to be the pot calling the kettle black...but tori amos fans get on my nerves. i don't want to hear you talking (during the show) about the difference between her performance of marianne in florida with the one she is CURRENTLY singing. nor do you need to prove to the venue that you know all the words by way of singing them along...loudly. and for the love of god, people, stop harrassing the security guards and techies when they are working. they don't know you and they probably don't like you when you bug the piss out of them. one of the highlights for me was during the piano bar segment. tori announceed the procedures and we began shouting our requests. being as close as i was, i was able to shout out "condition of the heart" quite audibly. unfortunately it was not quite audible enough because tori thought i asked for "total eclipse of the heart." she pointed over at me saying "hey! that's a good one, that's not a bad choice at all. unfortunately for you, you're fucked, because i've already decided what i'm playing." it was too funny. she began singing "turn around bright eyes..." and playing a bit but she didn't quite have it. she then went on to say that she would practice and do it in new jersey. it doesn't matter that i won't be there. it doesn't even matter that she misheard me. it was just a cool experience and fun 30 seconds! having woken up at 4:30am on wedneday morning (in order to get to nyc in time to be at my first school appointment), i was horrified at the clock when i got back to Dana's - 1:45am. the show - and the ocmpany i was with - was so much fun i had no idea i'd almost been awake for 24 hours! i had a blast. i can't wait to see her in a week in toronto. it sounds crazy but i just don't ever getr tired of seeing this woman perform; i could watch her fingers and face all night long, working that piano.

Awesome account of your experience. That bit reminds me of the Detroit show when you shouted out your request and she said "Forget it! You're never gonna get it." And when she mentioned playing something from a hometown hero someone yelled for Madonna. Her response was, "Fuck her. I already did her."
