George Johnson had a very telling comment in the new Brothers Johnson DVD.

He said: "The weather's not clear in the industry right now. They are willing to finance drugs but not a "concept" like another "What's Going On". Something that will educate people and "grow them up."

I don't want to mis-quote George so you can dig it on the DVD if you get a chance to watch it.

i'm not placing blame on the rap/hip-hop community, but i think there IS a pressure on mainstream rap artists to rely on cartoonish violence and hyper-materialism in their work and in their imagery in order to fulfill a standard of chart success.

i don't think it was considered "trendy" for cobain to kill himself or for scott weiland to be a career junkie, any more than billie holiday was trying to be "hip" by having an addiction or any more than karen carpenter was trying to make anorexia cool.

again, i'm not saying this to bust on hip-hop...i think the music industry is to blame. of course, the artists are complicit...but that's more of an individual thing than the fault of a genre.

I myself singled out no specific genre for the record...this individual is sharing and expressing their opinions and sentiments on the whole situation in hip hop music,I myself not really being a fan of the artists you yourself mentioned express no intrest in what they are going through, now if it makes you feel any better maybe you should start a thread singling out heroine addicted unruley law breaking rock artists, that way we can clear the notion of any racial conspiracy theories you obviously were trying to conjure up with your response.

you're right, but i think we may be talking about two different things. i don't think that the record labels are encouraging rock stars or R&B stars to have addictions or get into trouble with the law. i think that the pressures of fame probably have a lot to do with it, and the "lifestyle" of being in that world, but i don't think when a label is building an artist's image, they say "okay, we want everyone to think you're a heroin junkie and if you could drive irresponsibly, that would be really great too."

meanwhile, the whole thug/gangsta/bling stereotype is one that i believe the industry encourages, and i think it's got to be damn hard for a hip-hop act today to thrive without giving into that cliche'd image. i also think there are some soulless people out there who are so unconfident about their talent that they've totally embraced these cliches to get by, and that kind of dysfunction in the music community is what's gotta change ASAP...even asthetically, it feels to me like hip-hop is spinning its wheels.

I didn't mean you specifically. I meant in general.

No, but it appears you want it to be so you can decry it for whatever reasons, since you are blowing it way out of proportion as well as being presumptuous (whereas I have already agreed above that I may have been mistaken in my interpretation of the threads originators' intent).
