Justin Timberlake--yay or nay?

I go back and forth on this one. I think he's a great entertainer, but his music--I'm not sure. It seems like "fake" or "pop" soul...I respect his influences (Al Green, MJ, bits and pieces of hip hop)...but I dunno.

I sure lost some respect when I finally understood one of the lyrics from "Justified":

"You're outta this world BUT YOU'RE NOT GREEN/you don't know what you mean to me"

GREEN? LIKE ALIEN? LIKE OUTTA THIS WORLD??

LAME!!!

But, I can't hate on the man for one lyrical snafu...I saw him in concert along with Xtina one year and it was a mostly live band that was pretty funky (for pop)...

Whatcha all think?
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

hmmm

it's a bit early to tell.

good things:
He's cute. He's entertaining. He hasn't made a reality show. He's taken a nice break from his solo debut instead of just throwing out albums till people lost interest. He did "intimate" after shows during the Xtina tour.

bad things:
At previously noted "intimate" after shows, he still used backing vocals instead of just performing live. His lyrics are often plain silly. He deserted Janet during nipplegate.

who knows yet:
Upcoming roles in multiple movies. Will he crash and burn? Will he be good and actually gain some credibility? I think the reaction to his acting will play a big part in his future life as a pop star.

lol

that's way to much to think about JT

lol

Huh? He's a pop singer from one of the Boy Bands. He sold out from the beginning. I wouldn't say he's a has been. He hasn't done THAT much. He's known more for his name than music IMO.

He isn't any more phony than any of what the Music Machine pops out...Including Usher.

That's not what Legs is saying. Legs is saying that Usher is the lesser of two evils.

Yay! Justified surprised me, great contemporary pop/R&B album and much better than Confessions.
I've been to his concert in Arnhem and he put on a good show, and he sure can dance! Very obvious influences though (Michael, Marvin, Al Green..).
I see Justified as his first album so give the man a chance. smile

H's a bit of a fake IMO.

Apart from the fact that I find his singing voice excrutiatingly weak and irritating, the whole "I'm a credible artist" act he had going on with his promo campaign was quite desperate. Depending on what country he was in he would change his answers to questions about music hmmm In the UK his biggest influences were Radiohead and Coldplay nuts

His Grammy awards apology after the Superbowl was one of the funniest things though. Wasn't it straight after he got off stage after the nipple baring that he was bragging about it - "just giving the folks what they want", then as soon as the smell of bad press and criticism came his way it was "we never rehearsed it like that, it was set-up without my knowledge" [sic]

As much as I find Usher's ego annoying, I think it's funny that Justin is the one with [at least over here] about 3 times the promo & positive press attention, but Usher still does better commercially.

Of course, after the Super Bowl fiasco, I absolutely despised Justin. I've calmed down now though coz I just think it was a bad situation all the way around for EVERYONE. I STILL think Justin could have been more of a friend to Janet, but we don't even know what went on behind the scenes.

Outside of that incident, I've just never been a Justin fan. Even though someone posted a great pic of him, I've just never found him all that good- looking. I also haven't ever been a huge fan of his music either. He's only OK, but I guess he's a good dancer. Something that is positive about him is that he seems to pay respect to legends. I remember that he said something really nice about Johnny Cash and Ray Charles. So many of the young stars forget to mention "the past," so I thought that was nice of him. I read somewhere that he is getting some positive buzz about his acting, particularly one film role where he plays a killer or something. Maybe he'll leave music and concentrate on acting???

Well it's still a "nay" from me although I found a couple of nice things to say about him...

All fake posing as far as I'm concerned. He was gushing about Frank Sinatra one time and it turned out he didn't even know any of his songs apart from the obvious two or three. Like I said, he changes is views on music depending on who he's talking to. In the UK he whittles on about indie/rock bands. I see him in the US and he's waffling on about James Brown.

I used to think he was quite a good dancer, but I saw the Like I Love You Video on TV the other week and it's just messy and random - and I always wondered why the Neptunes decided to give him a song that was a rip off of 'Boys'. When he did it on TV his female back-up dancers were better than him, and they were dancing in high heels. In the video at the end when Pharrell comes on Justin looks like he's really trying hard and Pharrell is just pissing about, but is much better and flowing more naturally.

Hard work, choregraphy and "dancing cameras" can really do a lot to disguise things. Stick people like J'Lo and Justin in a room with no choreography and no back-up dancers and the illusion is gone.

Oh, and his "beatboxing" is abysmal. Flicking through Saturday morning kiddie TV shows and seeing the audience fornicating over him blowing rasbperries like it's the first time they've ever heard anyone do it was hilarious. I saw NERD in concert a couple of years ago and unfortunately Justin made a "surprise" appearance and ended up staying for the whole damn thing. Hearing him "beatbox" along with a true master, Killa Keller was one of the funniest things ever. My cat couching up furballs could have done better.
