Van Halen fans! Admit it, Van Halen were the greatest hard rock band of the late seventies, early 80's? Eddie's amazing playing, Dave's fun, partyman guise, the groove of the bottom end with Alex and Mike Anthony; at their best, just a monster, that will never be topped.
Eddie had this great way of using rythem playing, his two handed tapping and weird sound effects, revolutionizing the sound of guitar. The songs were always powerful and on point. They mixed a bluesy, soulful groove to back the hard metal edge, that went down like a good beer and wing dinner. These mothers were just awsome, and they will always be my fave band. Too bad they turned into pop fuckups. Hell, Eddie is even fucking up on guitar, live now. Sad. But, to remember the past. There's always those great few albums to keep me ticking. Thank God for the brown sound. All you others say Hell Yea!!

As a VH'er from way back, I believe it is the sound Eddie makes on the bottom end (lowest string) when he strikes the note and and bends it downward. He also does it starting down on the whammy bar, strikes the note, then brings it up. It sounds like some sort of growl. I miss that sound. Classic Eddie... I'm trying t othink of example songs to hear it on, but I'm at work and can't think of one at the moment....gimme a sec... I am MrVictor....

It is the way the music makes you feel, kind of like Prince's ideal of Paisley Park, or the Dawn. All you others say Hell Yea!!

Actually, I heard many an interviewer and fan refer to this sound. They all stated that EVH was the only one doing that particular sound on the low 'E' string (not sure if it's tuned downward). I am MrVictor....

Actually the term "brown tone" did not originate with Eddie Van Halen. It was once beleived that sounds in a certain very low frequency could cause a person to release their bowels(which is brown in color). Since Eddie was the guitarist who made popular use of the very low tone on the low E string through use of a whammy bar, the term "brown sound" or "brown tone" was attributed to him.

I'm thinking South Park now. "I saw a woman with major Hammer pants on the subway a few weeks ago and totally thought of you." - sextonseven

Re: The Brown Sound. Eddie stated in Musician magazine (circa 1984) that he attempts to get the sound of metal hitting wood, "a brown sound."

They were a great band during the David Lee Roth years. David Lee Roth looked great in a towel too. Andy is a four letter word.

The Roth Era of Van Halen was the truth, Great songs and Eddie and that guitar was on fire. After Roth got kicked out the fire went out

Incredible debut album. If they had never another album they'd still be legends.

I love Van Halen but the band and music was a time and place for me.
I've grown and changed musical tastes but summer and side 1 of Fair Warning blaring out of my car still makes me feel good.

Man, I've been a fan of Van Halen ever since their first album. I only dig the o.g lineup, though. Have all of their albums with David Lee. I have seen them in concert twice. I grew up on Van Halen. Play their shit all the time in my ride, especially "Runnin With The Devil". Gene Simmons of KISS had a lot to do with most of their song arrangements on their first two albums. He cut all of their demos before they got signed with Warners. Also, before they were signed, when they used to gig at The Starwood in Hollywood, they used to cover The Ohio Player's cut "Fire". SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Vain Baby, you won't get an arguement from me there. He had such a nice ass. I still remember when I bought his first solo EP. It's a shame how this man aged . I guess drugging and booze will can really do a rocker in.

BG Baby, Running With The Devil is also one of my favorite Van Halen songs. I bet they really tore The Ohio Players Fire up for sure. The orginal VH lineup definitely had some Funk in their bones.

As a guitarist, I never thought I would say this but; "Can somebody please turn down the guitars?" I saw VH at the Spectrum in philly many years ago when David Lee was still in the band('bout 3rd album) and they were insanely LOUD. Yes, I said it "Too Loud"!!!
My ears were ringing when I got into my car after only about only 20 minutes of exposure. Yes, there is such a thing as being too loud![b] [b][Edited 8/10/05 12:24pm]

I saw VH at The Forum here in L.A. Strange thing. It wasn't the guitars that had my ears ringing but the DLR screams. I agree that bands generally play much too loud for the venue. The Police and Prince sounded great at The Forum. VH definitely didn't. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

Eddie was a great rhythm player. As a whole, the o.g. lineup always seemed like they were havin' a ball and gettin' wasted while recording. A true "party" band.
As an aside, I also dug Vito Bratta of White Lion, who I always thought of as an Italian Eddie Van Halen My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth
