Sire Records 30th Anniversary Box Set

From Billboard.com:

Sire Celebrates 30th With Four-Disc Set

By Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

With its 30th anniversary looming in 2006, Sire Records will be celebrated this fall with a four-disc boxed set. Due Sept. 13 via Sire/Rhino, "Just Say Sire: The Sire Records Story" rounds up 61 tracks on three audio CDs and another 20 music videos on a DVD.

Sire was founded in 1966 by former Billboard staffer Seymour Stein and Richard Gottehrer. The label is perhaps best known for revealing the New York underground rock scene (the Ramones, Television, the Talking Heads) to a worldwide audience in the mid and late 1970s and, years later, rearing the careers of such acts Madonna, the Pretenders and the Smiths.

The more I look at it, the more I like it. Even The Cure is represented when they were signed to Sire for like, two minutes.

I'm surprised that Seymore didn't put another track on there for the biggest act he signed.

I wonder if she or WB stood in the way.

right but her contract was bought out from Sire in 86 or 87 even though Sire remained on her albums until 94.

It seems like every artist is limited to one track only. I think that's fair.

i understand. But her contract was bought from Sire in 86 or 87. WB realized Sire had a better deal when it came to making money off of her. When she resigned her contract in 91, which spawned Maverick, she sign her record deal with WB with a distbution deal for Maverick, she kept Sire on her albums as an ode to Seymore, but when he left WB to go after the London undergroud scene Sire was dropped from her albums.

Sire was a good label. Connected to Mute records.

Lots of good choices and a fewe interesting ones like Minisrty, Deborah Harry and Pet Shop Boys. I would have made better choices than those songs...but hey that's only 3 out of well a bunch of good songs.

That is correct. I have the 12" of Sweet and Low and it has the old Yellow Sire label.

I understand only one Madonna track....but "Everybody". Yes, it was her first single but she was on the label for years! I would have made more sense to put "Like A Prayer". Not that the Madonna track makes or breaks it. A really good tracklisting.

I think "Everybody" sounds better in the context of the box set. Something really poppy and frothy like for example "Cherish", would stick out like a sore thumb.

It makes sense - it was her first single and it leads off the set.

Seriously, they can't include everyone that was ever signed to Sire. I would have loved if Specimen and The Distillers were represented also, but they aren't. sad

I (and anyone who remembers tommy) will know why they left him off. Shame. I think most pop fans could swallow a song as deliberately cheesy as "i'll be your everything".
