Hey LATINOS! Reggaeton or Bachata?

If you are a hispanic...or just enjoy latin music, then you're familiar with these 2 "new" styles of music.

Seems like the old Salsa vs. Merengue feud (a/k/a Puerto Ricans vs. Dominicans) has resurfaced in the form of Reggaeton vs. Bachata.

Just when it seemed like Bachata was taking over the hispanic airwaves...then Reggaeton came along and just exploded on the scene! Heck - we even have a radio station in NY ("La Calle") that plays nothing but Reggaeton!!!

So - which do you prefer?

Tejano/Norteño music gets no love even though it outsells every other form of Latin music.

Why cant Latinos listen to the same music the rest of us listen to? These new music trends are just awful. There are no grooves or skilled song writing to be found, anywhere.
All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Everyone is entitled to the freedom of their own tastes, 2freaky. What your statements implies to me is that Latinos have no place unless the listen to a certain type of music. Well, guess what? There is no one type of music. Latino-flavored music is music, period. There are grooves and creative songrwriting all over the place, it's just in a different genre. All musis will not follow a basic intro-verse-chorus-verse-etc. structure to win approval.

Where is the art if it all sounds alike? This wreaks of a reminder of slavery days, IMO. rolleyes

i agree...my problems is that lack of orginality(sic?)...that some latino artists have....reggaeton and or bachata was good for the artist that created it becuase well its thier masterpiece they can mold it anyway they want, and win lots of money...quite frankly...thats the only thing i got a grudge on.. lol i hope that does not sound angry or confusing..

but we could have more..im not saying getting far away from the typical..genre we are stuck on,becuase of our race, etc. i'm just saying it would be cool, if more artist of the same race could expirement more,to come up with unique genre of music, something that does not sound,or rips off the next artist.

Latin alternative is the type I like the best. The artists in that genre are more diverse.

see.. i never heard of this genre before, you see being hispanic and having hispanic parents, they tend to listen to less exipiremental bands, and the more party harty music...recommend a band from the latin alternative scene?

2freaky4church!
That comment is just rude!
I'm an Afro-American-Latino and I don't think everyone has to listen to the same kinds of music that I do!

Every culture has their own and if we all did the same things in life, it wouldn't be worth living anymore...thats not exciting!
We all should respect that everyone has their own thing!

I can't decide b/t Reggaeton or Bachata!
I listen to Reggaeton more often...and Bachata is just so soothing and emotional for me!
So hmmmm...If I had to decide, then it'd be Bachata...because there so much more you can do with it...I Think!

1.) We DO listen to the same music as the rest of America. We just like additional styles in addition to the music that "the rest of you" listen to. I personally love rock/soul/jazz/latin/etc.

2.)You said these new music trends are just awful. If you are referring to reggaeton...guess what? I'm "Hispanic" and I totally hate reggaeton. Don't care for bachata either, but I got no hatred towards bachata, just neutrality.

3.) Regarding the lack of skilled songwriting in reggaeton, I totally agree. From my p.o.v. it pretty much sucks, but that's just me.

4.) There are a lot of great artist from all paths of life and genres, including Latin artists, that do make great, cutting edge music. My family comes from Cuba and I can tell you that the musicianship in Cuba is absolutely unbelievable but the music they make will never blow up because it's just too musically sophisticated...think super complicated grooves and harmony that most people have trouble interpreting if they've never heard it before. The style of music I'm referring to is called "Timba." It's from Cuba and it's a combination of salsa, jazz, and funk. And also there are TONS of Cuban musicians that are world class jazz musicians. Probably among the most famous are Chucho Valdes, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D'Rivera...just to name a few.

5.) You probably didn't mean anything negative from your post, but I just want to say that you shouldn't ask other people to conform to what you like because other people could say, "Why don't YOU listen to what we listen to?" At the end of the day, we are all 99% the same. The "American" way is great but there are other cultures and ways of life that are also great. Every culture has their strengths and weaknesses.

Sorry if I came off mean or preachy, didn't really mean to do that. Just wanted to express a few points. Hope everyone understands what I'm trying to say and doesn't take it the wrong way.

WOW! I didn't mean to ignite a Latin Music War . . . all I wanted to know was whether more people liked Raggaeton or Bachata...in consideration of the historical "rivalry" between their antecedents...salsa and merengue.

It is a GIVEN that Latin music encompases a multitude of musical styles, as Chico noted above. His list - while extensive - still only scratched the surface of the various forms of music that we "hispanoablantes" have at our disposal. Think of all the various musical styles that you can find in one single country such as CUBA (danzon, cha-cha-cha, rhumba, guaguanco, mambo, etc.).

As for 2FREAKY4CHURCH1's comment....either your bias or your ignorance is showing through. Leave that sh*t at the door. What do you mean by "the same music as the rest of us"? The rest of WHO??? Same music as in "Heavy Metal" or as in "Country" or as in "Hip-Hop"???
Please. Latins were singing baladas in America 200 years before the Mayflower. We have hundreds of years' worth of musical heritage to enjoy. If you don't like it, then change the station.
