System of a Down??? Really?

Admittedly, I'm a fuddy duddy, someone a little too mired in music released between the 1960's and the 1990's.

Be that as it may, I just finished seeing System of a Down -- well, hearing, as my TV's in a different room -- on SNL...

All I can say is... "They're considered good? Really?"

What's the appeal, SOAD fans? Break it down for me, please.

This Generation X'er thanks you.

Okay, I'm not a "fan" per se, but they have a couple of tracks I really like. First off, the drummer is off the hook. Secondly, they have an unusual approach to arrangements. There's no one else making arrangements like them. The vocals are slightly arabic style; not like Ra, but more abstract. I wouldn't put them in the hall of fame in any particular category, but their arrangements are very unique and the musicianship is pretty damn good. To even come up with some of the weird progressions and changes that they do takes a decent degree of creativity. That's why I like a few of their songs. They are definately an acquired taste, though. The first time I heard them, I thought they sucked.

Ah, on the second song they did, I noticed the drummer's fills. Very tight. Very tight, indeed. hmmm

Still didn't dig the songs, though.

lol I love Serj's vocals. I wouldn't call myself a huge fan though. Mesmerize was sort of a let down, imo. I think it's because Daron tried to step in and do too much. I actually like their debut album a little bit better than I like Toxicity. Most of their fans consider Toxicity to be their best so far. shrug

I fucking love them...every album...every song...every message...

Serj and Darian have something interesting to say...and I dig that in music.

They are expanding their music a bit..with some of the "softer" tracks on the new album...

Nothing wrong with a little change..as long as you stay true to yourself...

Can't say that about alot of other artists...

Serj does look a little on the psychotic side at times lol

giggle

He seems calm in interviews though, nothing like his stage persona.

Daron can look pretty psycho too at times.

I agree, BK.
The arrangements and unique sense of style is what drew me to them. I love Toxicity. There are lots of cool melodies and good guitar playing in that record.
