Anyone else love these silly/poignant fools?

69 Love Songs is in constant rotation on my ipod.

They go from singing "Book of Love," a beautiful love song, to "Papa Was a Rodeo," a silly love song. Their lyrics sometimes border on absurdity but somehow it almost always works.

If you're looking for something new, they're wonderful!

Now, back to my thesis...

I fall in and out of love with the Magnetic Fields. When I feel like listening to them, it can feel like some of the greatest music I've ever heard, but at times they do strike as just a touch too...I dunno, fey or campy. Having said that, I never get tired of certain songs - papa was a rodeo, luckiest guy on the lower east side, acoustic guitar...I also really liked the first Sixths lp.

And after I listen to them for a long time, I have to listen to something else (although this goes for a lot of artists, for me). But the songs by them that I love, I really, really love! ("Book of Love," especially...there is an indie film by the same name that uses two of their songs within the movie...the main character sings "Book of Love," and the couple dances to "Nothing Matters While We're Dancing" - I think that's the correct title...) And I will NEVER tire of "All My Little Words." That song breaks my heart every time.

I know exactly what you mean - I'm generally not a person who pays a great deal of attention to lyrics, but I do think he's an extremely skilled writer. When he's on, he can really 'wow' you - I just think that he can occasionally be a little lazy and fall back on gimmicks that he's come to rely on through the years - but I suppose we all do that in one way or another.

I've never heard of the movie you've mentioned, but your description really interests me - I'm heading down the the indie/foreign specialty video store tomorrow, so hopefully I'll come across it.
