There is no such thing as a "musical genius"

The term "musical genius" is thrown around alot as of late, personally I don't see it. Prince plays many musical instruments, but can't get a song on MTV, Stevie Wonder hasn't put out a good album in over 20 years, same as Paul McCartney.

Explain this to me people: If they are a "musical genius", why don't they stick to made them popular?? That would seem to be a "common sense" type of move...

Being on MTV in no way, shape or form makes somebody a genius.

A marketing genius, perhaps....But having musical talent and being popular stopped having anything in common a long time ago.

The boldness to step away from the past and attempt something new is part of what makes a musical genius a musical genius.

Many geniuses were not popular during their lifetime.

Got nothing against her music. It's fluffy and fun, but challenging and thought-provoking it is not. She's one helluva businesswoman though. smile

Being a musical genius has nothing to do with the number of appearances on a television network which is geared towards a demographic under 25.

Nor is there a "what have you done for me lately?" requirement for musical geniuses. Their musical output survives the test of time. Surely you realize that to say that Stevie Wonder is not a musical genius now because Talking Book and Songs In The Key of Life are over 30 years old is absurd. And what if they are deceased? Is John Coltrane not a musical genius because his music isn't in "heavy ro" on Hot 97? Is Miles Davis not a genius because Fitty hasn't remixed Sketches of Spain and gotten the video on TRL?

Come on, now.

The term is over-used, but I do think there are music geniuses. Mozart was definitely a genius. I read that Mozart would work-out everything in his head before committing his compositions to paper. Chopin was a genius, too. I could list more, but many classical artists were geniuses.

As far as modern artists, mmmmm I don't know. sad I used to think that Stevie Ray Vaughan was a sort of genius. In fact, Eric Clapton said during in interview that Stevie seem to be channeling from a higher-power when he played guitar.

The term may be overused, but there is such a thing, and I would definitely but prince, stevie and paul in that category. As many have pointed out, accessibility/popularity or commercial success is no measurement of genius or quality of any kind, nor is the consistency of a body of work. Everybody makes mistakes, and all things, including genius, are flawed. And btw, Stevie and Paul have made plenty of "good" albums since their prime, even if there haven't been any "great" ones in a couple decades.

I agree with a lot that's already been said. The term is overused thus misused. IMHO there have been very, VERY few true musical geniuses since the beginning of time. Most so-called musical geniuses are nothing but people who are extremeley dedicated to their craft.
I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!
