Miseducation of Lauryn Hill vs. Mama's Gun

Which one deserves to be the best female R&B album in the past decade?

Lauryn Hill "Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" (1998)

Erykah Badu "Mama's Gun" (2000)

I go with Mama's Gun though it's ALMOST a toss up. Nothing can beat "...& On," "Kiss Me on My Neck," "Cleva," "Green Eyes," "Pentitentiary Philosophy," or "Didn't Cha Know." Period.

From "Miseducation" my faves are "Ex Factor," "Doo Wop," "Final Hour," and the hidden gem "Tell Him."
I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

see...this is gonna be ugly... mad

I'm still staying with ms badu because Mama's Gun is solid. I tend to fast forward on much of Miseducation....its' really only about 3 or 4 joints on it that I really like.

I'm sorry...Mama's Gun is salvation to the soul.

Ms. Rhonda, you speak the truth as far as I'm concerned. Mama's Gun is one of my favorite albums of the last 5 years, and I feel Ms. Badu's work has only been getting stronger throughout her career. I always felt Miseducation was very overrated, although not a bad effort in itself. Lauryn had some good doo wop stylings, tho.

damn.

damn damn damn!

i LOVE both of these records. this is so hard. my initial response is mama's gun but i haven't listened to miseducation in its entirety in a while. i just got over a month long erykah badu binge so its kinda premature for me to answer just yet.

i'm gonna listen to both and come back with my decision. lol

"Miseducation" to me was like M.J.'s "Thriller"...It was great the 1st time I heard it..then I got sick of hearing it 100 times later. "Mama's Gun" is amazing and underrated. I like it better than "Baduizm".

I really never understood all the the hype over Miseducation. It was good but overall there were a lot of tracks I ended up skipping. Mama's Gun on the other hand is tight all the way through. It's one of those records you can listen to months or years later and still get something new from it.

So I go with Mama's Gun. biggrin

ok. i've listened to both cds and, while they are fresh in my mind, i can say i think mama's gun is the better disc.

bag lady, cleva, penitentiary philosophy, green eyes, booty...it just goes on and on (and on and on).

Hmm? They're the only choices for best female CD in the last 10 years? And is this only in the Neo Soul category? And to be honest, Badu's debut is better than Mama's Gun and that was released in 96, so that falls under the category as well.

But then there's India.Arie's Voyage To India in which I think is better than "Miseducation" and "Mama's."

LOL! I heard that, sista! In other words: "Stop being so damn analytical about it and answer the question fool!" LOL! Ok...uh - I'd have to say L-Boogie's album because it spawned some nice jams and Ex-Factor was the SHIT! But, if I could have sex with either of them, that would be better than smoking weed with Bob Marley. biggrin

The fact that many people like "Baduizm" better than "Mama's Gun" is still one of life's great mysteries to me. That album was way less varied, and so chilled out...it's practically lounge music. I like it a lot, no disrespect to Badu, but Mama's Gun is like 100% more diverse and her voice sounded a lot richer and fuller...IMHO of course.

Mama's Gun had no real direction. It was cool. Had some cool songs, but no theme. No vibe. I mean, she even changed the playlist at the last minute and THEY LEFT IT LIEK THAT! LOL! How fuckin' dumb was that?! Not a good move.

woot! With you all the way. Green Eyes is one of the greatest songs ever written, from one of the very best albums I have in my 2000+ collection of soul & funk albums. Top 10 best albums for me, easily. Im so glad that there are people on this mostly soul-less message board that agree with me wink
