Remember "pamela"? I like that one. Those harmonies were awesome.

No, it's not that either...

For me, TOTO is just too safe, and too well-behaved. TOTO is goody two-shoes. TOTO is dry sex with triple condoms...though very properly executed.

Toto was in a similar bag as Forignerand REO Speedwagon. They wrote MOR cuts for the masses. Well written, well played and well produced pop/rock. Lot of bands with that same formula during the late 70's , early 80's. That's what afforded them 9 cars, 3 mansions and a speedboat.

The main knock against them (and Foreigner, Styx, Journey, REO Speedwagon, etc.) is that they wrote a lot of well-crafted power pop songs that were popular on mainstream radio. There wasn't anything objectionable about their music, but a lot of critics dismissed them as being slick. Because the band members were accomplished studio musicians, their songs were well-produced, and they had a natural ear for playing the right hooks and grooves. Another knock against the band was that the band members actually liked each other, and they did not participate in or get caught up in any offstage drama, so there are no "Behind The Music" type stories about drug addiction, wife swapping, police incidents, etc., so that's why they are perceived as a "boring" band.

They are perceived as a boring band because their music is boring. Simple as that.
