Genesis are pretty crap period. Both phil and peter were better on their own.

"invisible touch" is ok though.

Yeah, but I always felt SH-era hits were more melodic than DLR-era hits.

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway got a fair amount of airplay. I don't know how it charted.

I am not a Genesis freak, but I think they were "better" when Gabriel was in the band. shrug

You're lucky this is the internet and that you're not standing beside me right now, because you'd get a swift slap in the head for that remark (only joking). biggrin

Here's the Gabriel era Genesis albums and the positions they reached on the UK charts :

1969 : From Genesis To Revelation (1969) - failed to chart.
1970 : Trespass - Nbr 19.
1971 : Nursery Cryme - failed to chart.
1972 : Foxtrot - Nbr 12.
1973 : Live - Nbr 9.
1973 : Selling England By The Pound - Nbr 3.
1974 : The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway - Nbr 10.

I don't know what you consider a major hit, but 3 albums in the top 10 and another 2 in the top 20 seems fairly major to me.

If your definition of 'BETTER' is bands who sold more records after their lead singer left, then yes, I guess Genesis do fit the description, but -

Genesis died when Phil Collins took over. The reason Gabriel era Genesis didn't have a plethora of hit singles is because they were focused not on making pop chart hits but on making original experimental music, which they did quite successfully. When that whiny slaphead took over, he turned them into a pop band who had 'hits'. Yeah, they were more famous and made tons of cash, but they became a completely different band. They are the perfect example to illustrate the point that just because you make hit records does not mean you are good.

Gabriel era Genesis = interesting, original, experimental band, released albums full of musical ideas, always delightful to listen to.

Collins era Genesis = a parody of their former selves, a 'lets run another instant hit up the charts' band, a 'let's cash in and make lots of money selling really banal simplistic moronic forgettable music instead of pushing our musical boundaries' band, the original boy band.

Most Gabriel era Genesis fans would agree that Phil Collins killed that band, and find the idea that anyone could even entertain the notion that Collins era Genesis is better, or even in any meaningful way comparable to Gabriel era Genesis, to be laughable and somewhat abhorrent.

As Jules (Samuel Jackson) says in Pulp Fiction :

"ain't the same ballpark, ain't the same league, ain't even the same fuckin' sport".
