Gotta say, all these maddona / janet threads are making me wanna go home and dig all my janet albums out again (my madonna ones are already out). I think RN and Control are both my favourite janet albums, with RN possibly just edgeing it. I do agree with Ellie that RN doesnt hold together as a concept album. There's too much pop / dance that is way remote from the "concepts", however i dont think that detracts from its appeal, more enhances it (I'd also say the same about Princes SOTT. Its always touted as a socially conscious album, when in reality, only around 2-3 tracks dicussed these themes, the rest were standard prince songs.)

I also think that all the interludes that she became obsessed with from this album on, dont help her work. If she presented an album of 10 of her best tracks - no interludes, i think it would encourage me to go by another janet album (which I haven't done since the Velvet Rope). The interludes are frustrating now.

I would say the reasons i voted for LAP are:
1) The title track outstrips anything on RN1814. Its a masterpeice that will live on beyond her interpretation of it. Im not sure i could say the same about any of the RN1814 songs.
2) The personal songs. Till Death Do Us Part, Oh Father, Promise To Try revealed a completely different Madonna. This was her being honest and vulnerable, perhaps for the first time. Its funny it took her almost 10 years to make songs this candid again. It also took Janet a similar time to get personal on one of her albums (The Velvet Rope).
3) I think Express Yourslef & Cherish are better pop songs than the "pop" songs on RN1814 (Escapade, Love Will Never Do Without You).....but only just mind.

Also the Express Yourself album version is THE best version there is. I'd choose horns and a real band over a dance mix any day.

Oh and also, I think for RN, people should be giving a little more credit to jam & Lewis for the whole "concept" thing. Wasn't a large part of this their idea?

No, the best version is the 7'' Remix, which is on the US promo CD only. It's the same as the album version, but with a little more punch and swing. Not a dance mix.

Nope, there is no extended version of the 7'' Remix. It runs 4:38.
