I wasn't talking about pop radio at all because most of the real funk never saw the light of day of pop radio. Most funk was played exclusively on R&B radio only.

Lionel Richie had already blown up years before Whitney with his very first solo album but his impact didn't influence everyone else to follow his lead like Whitney's impact did. Lionel did his thing and everyone else continued doing their's also.

I blame the hell out of gansta rap but I don't think it would have made such an impact if a void had not been there. In the late 1980s, after Whitney's huge rise, tons of other artists began watering down their music for pop appeal as well. Also, there were tons of them that made entire albums of nothing but ballads.

Some of the funkiest jams on the radio in the late 1980s were songs by rap artists such as The Egyptian Lover, The LA Dream Team, Run DMC, The 2 Live Crew, Afrorican, etc. That's all well and good because somebody had to speed up the pace and these guys were doing it because the funk acts sure as hell weren't doing it anymore. They were too busy going after the pop market.

Also during this time, there were tons of underground rap acts with the slower midtempo "talking over a beat" music that eventually would come above ground and dominate the radio. By the time the 1990s arrived, house music, an uptempo disco type music, had come above ground and took the title as "dance" music. For a while, it seemed like we were back on track. Unlike the funk, though, these songs began to become extremely repetitive and it went back underground. Also, I noticed a sort of "gay" backlash with house as had occurred with disco a decade earlier. At least after the disco backlash, the funk was still around to regain it's throne. After the house backlash, the only thing remaining was gangsta rap and the adult contemporary balladeer type artists that Whitney Houston had inspired.

She is the only one that can make Bobby look almost human. Wow its amazing where Whitney has gone, talk about Free Fall, whether her tv show antics are for ratings or attention, this woman makes Anna Nicole SMith look sane. Whitney in my opinion is now in the class of Britney and Paris in the Reality Tv clowns.The scary thing is this will probably draw attention to any new music Whitney does, if any. As u can tell Im not a whitney fan at all, I have never liked her from day one, but as Whitney has gone on she has proven herself to be the "Daryl Strawberry" of the Music industry. What i mean by that is that "daryl" used to blame everyone for his Drug addictions, he blamed the media, baseball, the announcers, other players on his team, the fans, his upbringing, etc....but never blamed himself, never took responsibility for his own life. Whitney is in that caliber, now I dont know what Addictions Whitney has but she obviously has some, but everywhere i have heard her blame everyone but herself, she blames the industry, the media, etc.. I know some of you blame Bobby for her downfall, but honestly Bobby is to blame for Bobby, and whitney, well hopefully one day for her own sake she will have a darryl strawberry ending and finall blame herself and take the blame and grow up.

Years ago I read the book that Whitney's former bodyguard wrote & this was before she was with Bobby, and he stated that she acted straght ghetto even back then. She also used to get high with laced joints and she even wanted to go and buy the stuff off the street herself according to the book and again this was all before Bobby, but yet the majority of people blame Bobby for actions!

It doesn't matter. She's already influenced an entire generation to record nothing but boring, rhythmless, adult contemporary type music. In the meantime, killing the funk and leaving the door open for hip hop to take over the other end of the spectrum that the adult contemporary didn't cover. It doesn't matter if her new music sells well or not, her damage has been done and I doubt we will ever be jamming again because of it.

Yes she did, but they were all weak, sugary, poppish, "girl next door, cheerleader" type songs. I remember when I first heard "How Will I Know".....
