What The Hell Went Wrong With Ray Parker Jr.? My Answer:
Instead of remembering Ray as a musical force in his own right, the last time some people are going the remember him for is this bullshit: I like this movie as a kid growing up in the 80's. But the movie's theme song ruined the career of Ray Parker Jr. forever!!! True or False? [Edited 7/29/05 19:44pm] [Edited 7/29/05 20:16pm]

I love What Ray Parker Jr. di with Raydio & also on hos own after that. The only thing I didn't like was that Ghostbusters track and also the Girls have more fun track where in the video he had a mini skirt on. But this cat was a sought after guitarist in the early 70's playing with Barry White, Marvin Gaye, & Stevie Wonder's Wonderlove Band.

Also, he used to play with Bill Withers and Roy Ayers.

"Ghostbusters" was an embarassment, and so was his 1985 single "Girls Are More Fun".But he bounced back in 1987 with a remarkably soulful album 'After Dark',which was a return to form.

pre-Gostbusters Ray(dio) was slammin, and as David pointed out, some 80/90s material was also kinda fine. but "Sex and the single man" was the ultimate crossover album desaster (second only probably to "Dancing on the ceiling"...) with cutting & pasting musical ideas from Prince, MJ, Lionel etc. but lacking any form of original Parker inspiration. horrible.
Ray appeared on some 80s retro show not to long ago on German televsion. perfoming: "Ghostbusters" of course... looking somewhat older, but who could blame him . [Edited 8/1/05 1:20am] Vanglorious... this is protected by the red, the black, and the green. With a key... sissy!

The same thing fucked up Ray Parker, Jr. that fucked up so many other R&B/funk artists.....intentionally watering down their music and going after the pop audience. Andy is a four letter word.

I don't know what Arnell Carmichael is doing now, but Ray needs to get back with dude and do a Raydio tour. There is a lot of money out there right now for old school groups and they would be a hot ticket. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

This album doesn't stack up with the Raydio albums of the past, but it's better than a lot of his other solo stuff. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance

LMAO, I remember when he was interviewed after he did "Ghostbusters". He literally begged someone to hire him as an actor. He was never heard from again.
I always thought the begging did him in.

So true, so very very true. I know the pop audience generates more revenue but end the end I wonder if it's really worth it?

What happened?
I think he started believing his press clippings about being a sex symbol and forgot about being a musician. Thanks Audi. That's exactly what I said in the other Ray Parker Jr. thread. Around 1985, he went thru the "Billy Dee-wanna be " phase. Eddie Murphy would soon follow in 1992.

That's Ray playing the impossibly funky guitar intro on "You Got The Love" by Rufus. I think he co-wrote it also.
Along the lines of what V said when you go after crossover success things can change in the music. Ray has made a fortune in session work and excellent real estate deals. In a magazine called Musician Nelson George wrote a really good article on the difference between the "LA sound" back in the days in music vs.the sound of the way guys in New York played. It wasn't covered as much in "The Death Of Rhythm and Blues" Record Companies encourage it and I think some musicians say "Hey, I want a piece of that." For instance George Benson. We know George is a master on the guitar and a heaven of a vocalist but if you listen to him in interviews he's a bit like Chuck Berry: "Gimme The Loot" and I'm going to add some water to this gravy. It's just the way the industry goes. If George would have refused to "go smooth" they would have stuck Jonathan Butler in his spot. (Which they still tried to do) but you can't replace a musician with authority and knowledge like George.
