the byrds - sweethard of the rodeo hey,
finally got around buying this one. It has been on my most-wanted list for quite some time now and yesterday I found it for 8$. Gave it a first listen last night and I was quite impressed by it. Gram parsons contributions are very fitting in this album, especially hickory wind caught my attention. after another listen this morning I'm really glad I finally picked it up, cause this is an album I'm gonna enjoy for a long time, very similar to CSNY but very different just the same. Maybe I'll get me some more byrds albums, but first complete my CSNY collection. It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

two views and no responses to a thread about one of the greatest albums ever...
I think we can count this as one of the signs the apocalyps is near... It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

I like Sweetheart of the Rodeo, but I actually prefer the later Byrds albums and Gram Parsons' later records as part of the Burrito Bros and as a solo act.
Here's a quick quiz: do you know what the connection is between this album and Sweethearts of the Rodeo? sweet not sweat edit [Edited 7/30/05 11:56am]

It has grown on me a bit, but it just doesn't rev me up the way I hoped it would...so, what's the connection?

It has grown on me a bit, but it just doesn't rev me up the way I hoped it would...so, what's the connection? I believe the connection is the song "The Christian Life", which was a Louvin Brothers original that the Byrds covered on Sweetheart Of The Rodeo. I think it's true that the album doesn't quite live up to the hype, but at the time it was a fairly radical shift in sound and it still holds up as a great album. And I must point out that Sweetheart Of The Rodea came out a full four years before the Eagles' first album. Country rock pioneers my ass!
