"Fame" bass line by Bowie /James Brown Question for you musicians out there:
While we are on the subject of bass lines/guitar riff (from another thread): Fame by David Bowie had originally started off as a song called Footstompin, according to Carlos Alomar (Bowie's second best guitarist (see Mick Ronson). To make a long story short, it was said that James Brown liked the bass line/guitar riff so much that he used it in one of his songs. What song did JB use it in? Thanks for any info. P.S. Thanks (to those of you) for the help a couple of weeks back on Station to Station. The album kicks serious ass! "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

Carlos Alamar had done some sessions with James close to the same time that Bowie dropped Fame. Of course, being the mid/late seventies, James brown was artistically running dry, and being that "Fame" was very much a JB-esque Funk Tune, James felt he was entitled to rip off someone who was ripping off him, so he copied the riff and practically the whole arrangement. Alroy of Wilson and Alroy's record reviews says that Bowie and Alamar themselves stole the riff from Earth Wind & Fire's "Power" but I've listened to both and can't hear the similarity

I read that David Bowie was ready 2 sue
James Brown but waited 2 see if the song would go 2 the charts. Apperantly James version did'nt do that good so Bowie did'nt bother. /peace Manki

"Fame was inspired by James Brown so Bowie thought it was kinda cool that Brown copped the riff. Don't know if its true, but I certainly like that story better! Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

And "Hustle" wasn't a bad album either..... "Slaughter's Big Rip Off" were outakes of stuff that he did already... And "Its Too Funky In Here" was the only good thing on the "Original Disco Man" album... I couldn't believe that he label himself a Disco Man...
