hold up. why are yall going on about songs that weren't even singles to begin with? last time i checked the only singles off of musicology was call my name, musicology and cinnamon girl.

Regardless of the fact of the songs not be released as singles, the fact remains that they wouldn't got played even if they got released as singles.

ur probly right. but u know why they wouldn'tve gotten played on bet? cuz noone was gonna vote for them. correct me if i'm wrong but aren't the vid shows on bet vote shows? i'm sure they would've debuted the vid, but yea ur right they probly wouldn'tve gotten played.

Prince's "Automatic" was never a single either but there was a video for it and it got played on BET. I saw it on the "Video Vibrations" "Monday Music Prince Marathon".

yea but thats just it. there was a vid for it. there aint no vids 4 dear mr man or on the couch.

Also, as far as radio is concerned, back in the day long before the days of Clear Channel, many album cuts that were never released as singles were played on the radio constantly.

don't they still do that though?

It's even got to the point that I only hear singles (only the ones that were extremely popular) even on the oldies stations. Of course, you know who owns them. That's one of the reasons I started my "Forgotten Funk" thread a few months ago.

And I have to qeustion if BET playing these songs constantly creates the buzz about a song. I bet is BET had played more of Musicology cuts... particularly Dear Mr. Man or On the Couch there would have been more buzz for those songs. I think Mariah's new hit, was weak when I first heard it, but hearing it played literally a dozen times a day... the song grows on you.
That is why these mediocre songs become hits... because BET (and other venues similar Clear Channel etc.) selects those songs to become hits... and then create the hits.

I dont even think "Dear Mr Man" and "On The Couch" were even played on the radio...or at least not in my area - personally, I dont think they wouldve made good singles anyway. They did played "Call My Name" plenty times though.

That must be JUST in your area cuz they shole played DEAR MR. MAN and ON THE COUCH here..

Well you must be lucky enough to live in an area that still has some individually owned radio stations because they didn't play those songs in my area either.

Sounds like the stations in my area back in the day. We need more stations nationwide where the people at each individual station, that know the people in that area, makes the playlist....rather than executives making the same playlist for stations nationwide. That way, the area gets more variety and a nice competition between the stations of similar genres in that area. Also, local bands were supported when radio was ran like this.

Unfortunately, you may be right. We had a great R&B station last year that boasted that it played R&B for adults. It was really giving the other two similar stations (one of which is owned by Clear Channel) a run for their money. Unlike the other two stations, not only did they play slow songs, but they also played plenty of funk and disco. In other words, they played variety. They even had a Saturday Night old school mix show, which everyone was loving.

Unfortunately, one morning I tuned in to that station on my way to work and it had been turned into a country station. The R&B station had only been on the air for one year and the format was changed at the height of it's popularity.

This thread evolved into an interesting one. Everyone has good suggestions (except for a few of you who are delusional about what BET was supposed to be about)
They have had a history of eliminating good programming (like BET Next that focused exclusively on non-traditional artists) and Teen Summit. This is nothing new to them; sacrificing the important for what might be more popular. That Uncle Tom Bob Johnson always had money on the brain and has no loyalty whatsoever towards the black community where BET is concerned. He's even said so himself. Celebs only treat him the way they do because he's a billionaire.
There is only one solution. STOP WATCHING B.E.T. Someone earlier mentioned TV-One. That may be our next best bet. Viacom owns BET now. We will NEVER get what we want. Already, they are making subtle changes in preparation for their total takeover, since Bob is officially out the door as CEO this year. On BET Nightly News we see less of Jackie Reed, a very typical looking black woman and more of Michelle Mitchell, a high yellow and much more "universally identifyable" counterpart. That's not a diss on Miss Mitchell. She seems to be doing a decent job; it speaks more about whomever is in charge. Whenever non-blacks are involved in decisions like this, we see two things: fewer lighter-skinned black males and more lighter-skinned black females. Its no secret that the popular and most visually comfortable stereotypes on television and in Hollywood these days (I'm not talking about the Prince/Debarge era) are light skinned black women and dark skinned black men. This is very deliberate, but I'm not going into why on this thread. The company is playing subtle image games and most are probably unaware. The former host of The Center, Tiffany - a carmel-colored sister who also looked very typical in the community but not so much on television was replaced by the most untalented. flighty personality on BET - Julissa. This woman can't read for sh*t. She always makes mistakes, reads the telepromter in an annoying cheerleader-like voice and has the personality of a cottonball. Her ONLY quality is her asthetics. Again, a "universally accepted" standard of beauty (she's hispanic but could pass for a high yellow sista) is applied here. I could spend all day on the programming flaws, but since that's already been done, there's no need. I'm just making the point that BET is done for. As Voices Carry said - stick a fork in it. "Uncle" Bob isn't there anymore, so with him went the leverage of at least having the respect that he was once the owner of the company and built it to where it is today. BET will never live up to black peoples' expectations under the ownership of Viacom. Just look at Vh-1 and Mtv. That is the future of BET. Only difference - black & hispanic faces in place of white ones.

co-signed and that is a great post right there

nod Then again we can look at the bright side of things. It's all the more reason to turn off the television and get our kids to use their brains. We act like television and radio are necessities. Somehow people survived for thousands of years without them. Maybe it's run its course.
