I've written to BET, my local newspapers, and my local radio stations about the stuff our kids are exposed to. I have also written about it here. But, for the last five years, the majority of folks obviously thought this shit was okay for their kids because the audience is always full of teenagers. My kids cannot watch that stuff, period.Cool, good shit then. "But what of black women? . . . No lie, I was talking to a freind of mine last night before this thread came out and we were talking about MTV and VH1 and how bad it is today and I was thinking about writing to them about the shows and music. Now with this thread, I convinced that we need to be some writing and calling fools with Viacom. What's the worst that can happen with that? Now that's what I'm talkin' about..PROaction! But it is the videos that they, along with MTV and Clear Channel, helped to make popular. I remember many videos being played on BET that were never popular. Unfortunately, I never got BET until the 1990s but I remember them playing some of the house videos such as "Don't You Love Me" by The 49ers. Even in the mid 1990s, I remember them playing "Slyde" by Cameo, "Slide" by The Bar-Kays, "Peace Sign" by War, "Take Me Higher" by Diana Ross, etc. If it had not been for BET, I would never have known about these songs because they got absolutely NO radio airplay in my area. If my memory is correct, Robert Johnson, the founder of BET, sold BET over to Viacom in 2001. I don't know how much money he received but it's safe to say it was in the hundreds of millions. He just announced on the BET Awards last month that he was stepping down from the CEO spot or something like that and passing the torch to a female who's name escapes me. I remember people here were concerned about BET's future and where it was going to go. Most here believed it was going to become more like MTV and unfortunately they were "dead on it". Well I hope he succeeds cause a change is in order. In fact it's a couple of days late. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

This thread evolved into an interesting one. Everyone has good suggestions (except for a few of you who are delusional about what BET was supposed to be about)
They have had a history of eliminating good programming (like BET Next that focused exclusively on non-traditional artists) and Teen Summit. This is nothing new to them; sacrificing the important for what might be more popular. That Uncle Tom Bob Johnson always had money on the brain and has no loyalty whatsoever towards the black community where BET is concerned. He's even said so himself. Celebs only treat him the way they do because he's a billionaire. There is only one solution. STOP WATCHING B.E.T. Someone earlier mentioned TV-One. That may be our next best bet. Viacom owns BET now. We will NEVER get what we want. Already, they are making subtle changes in preparation for their total takeover, since Bob is officially out the door as CEO this year. On BET Nightly News we see less of Jackie Reed, a very typical looking black woman and more of Michelle Mitchell, a high yellow and much more "universally identifyable" counterpart. That's not a diss on Miss Mitchell. She seems to be doing a decent job; it speaks more about whomever is in charge. Whenever non-blacks are involved in decisions like this, we see two things: fewer lighter-skinned black males and more lighter-skinned black females. Its no secret that the popular and most visually comfortable stereotypes on television and in Hollywood these days (I'm not talking about the Prince/Debarge era) are light skinned black women and dark skinned black men. This is very deliberate, but I'm not going into why on this thread. The company is playing subtle image games and most are probably unaware. The former host of The Center, Tiffany - a carmel-colored sister who also looked very typical in the community but not so much on television was replaced by the most untalented. flighty personality on BET - Julissa. This woman can't read for sh*t. She always makes mistakes, reads the telepromter in an annoying cheerleader-like voice and has the personality of a cottonball. Her ONLY quality is her asthetics. Again, a "universally accepted" standard of beauty (she's hispanic but could pass for a high yellow sista) is applied here. I could spend all day on the programming flaws, but since that's already been done, there's no need. I'm just making the point that BET is done for. As Voices Carry said - stick a fork in it. "Uncle" Bob isn't there anymore, so with him went the leverage of at least having the respect that he was once the owner of the company and built it to where it is today. BET will never live up to black peoples' expectations under the ownership of Viacom. Just look at Vh-1 and Mtv. That is the future of BET. Only difference - black & hispanic faces in place of white ones.

It's all about context. Some of the white jokes on Comic View were really funny, and some were downright nasty. The same can be said doubly about the jokes aimed at gays and Asians on that show. I don't think any one group of people is off limits, but (for me, anyway) when the people you're targeting aren't "in on the joke" it becomes a little more problematic. Just my Don't hate me

Ok, but YOU took it too far with N word and Coon. NO white comedian in their right mind would go there. There are just some unspoken rules that ALL comics know not to break, trust me. Frankly, I like it bow that white comics are starting to try and imitate blacks, we've been doing it to them from Pryor to Eddie to Rock to Tucker to Martin, it's only fair (and about time I might add) that that double-standard get done away with.
