Black Entertainment Television is an oxymoron. There is nothing entertaining about black men parading around like pimps and the classless video vixens who subjugate themselves to their misogynistic hijinks's. The images in rap music, which is pretty much all BET shows, are truly perverting and overstimulating the minds of our youth.

So I say the hell with it. I'm pretty much disgusted with entire black bourgeoise who continue to look the other way while the lions share of our people are suffering under the weight of this capitalistic system which they unwittingly support.

Sports Illustrated reports that 40% of the top 50 paid athletes are from the NBA but only one of them is in the top 10 of athletes in terms of the size of their charitable contributions. They don't give back to the same neighborhoods that they were so fortunate enough rise out.

You mean to tell me that all your so called black leaders and social organizations, like Jessie Jackson, NAACP, Frats and Sororities who are suppose to look out for black people can't see the enemy within? That rap music if allowed to reign unchecked will destroy all morals, character and ethics in our culture. You mean to tell me that these well traveled, well to do African Americans can't see the image that we are shipping to the world of black people has all but tarnished and shaped our imaged abroad!

BET has immense potential, but like so much in the black community remains untapped and uninspired.

clapping Well said and if I may add, it really pisses me off that when the media focuses on black culture today, if you go by what you see, it seems that it's nothing but a hip-hop culture and we are much more than that. I'm not dogging hip-hop because it's a part of our culture but it doesn't make up the whole culture. There are loads of black folks and young ones at that, who are just going to school or going to work and go home and work on their families. I don't want to say no more on it but I feel like the media pigeon hole's us for one thing when we are so much more and that should be embraced. I hope I made some kind of sense.

Wow,this is such a powerful post!!

The show was pretty good, I can't stand all you uppity black folks that down shows like 106 and Park.

The show gave every artist a chance to shine, some artist we would have never seen they videos, if it was not for 106 and Park.

Free and AJ were good for the show. They never sold out.

More than likely, that young latino chick will be the host, and prob a white guy.

They made 106 and Park a household name, and BET basically turned it's back on them, just like they do every black host they have that starts getting a name.

As long as they keep BET Uncut.

That Cousin Jeff show is low quality garbage PBS crap. His show is something you see on PBS, created by a group of poor directors. What's the point of the show? It's more like a PSA.

BET Nightly News is garbage, and shoulda have been canned years ago. All they do is take news feeds from other stations, hodge podge them together and call it BET Nightly News. WHo is really peeping BET for the damn news. LOL

The Tavis Smiley show was a hot show, but BET made sure less people were watching it, so they would not have to pay Tavis.

BET is what it is. No matter what people say, they still watching it, becasue it has stuff people wan't to see.

I support BET, Im off to watch some more BET Uncut, ya simps.
lol lol

Aside from the notion that capitalism is automatically bad (and I ain't a huge fan of it unchecked), I agree with what you've said. clapping

And I'm glad you qualified "black leaders" with "so-called," 'cause they sure as hell ain't my leaders. One must wonder, though, why the need for "black leaders?" I mean, who are the Asian, Latino or Pacific Islander "leaders?" I think part of our problem is that we too often look to some other figure to be our champion instead of leading our individual selves.

Anyway, I've lamented BET for a long time. Besides Tavis, I've found no reason to return nightly since Donnie Simpson and "Video Soul" waaaaay back in the day.

Now I know alot of you want to say they've BEEN over with, but no there has still been a little tiny light of life still shining from them. Lets take a took a look at all of the shows and people that made BET worth while

Teen Summit, Tavis Smiley, Ed Gordan, Cita's World, Hits From The Streets, Live In LA, Big Lez, Joe Clair, and many other shit.

Today we learned that AJ & Free will no longer be on 106 & Park (AJ was crying on the show today cause it was their last day and he was wearing a T-Shirt that said "Still Free"; Free wasnt there, but shes been abscent for weeks - I heard she wasnt happy about something which leads me to believe that something is going on behind the scenes. But other than that, they took Tigga off of Rap City Basement and gave it to weak ass Mad Linx. There has been talk of them taking "Bet Nightly News" off and replacing it with a "MTV News"-type of thing where they show up like once every hour.

And then there's the re-runs of "The Parkers" and "Girlfriends." Why...? Does MTV show re-runs of "Step By Step" and "Boy Meets World"??? Does CMT show re-runs of the "Andy Griffth Show" or "Little House Of the Praire"???

Viacom is fucking this channel up.

Check it out ...Shiny Toy Guns R gonna blowup VERY soon and bring melody back to music..you heard it here 1st! http://www.myspacecomment...theone.mp3

106 & Park was something for the teens but they should have kept Teen Summit which was excellent. BET has no balance and that's the problem. Nothing wrong with 106 if you have teen summit. They've said that 106 would beat out TRL when they were on at the same time. If you noticed, TRL comes on earlier than 106 now.

BET will change when they think they will lose $$$.

No protest. No revolution. Same shit will happen.

Indeed! And his show used to have alot of "old school" artists....folks like Chaka,Bootsy,Earth Wind and Fire,The OJays, and others would routinely visit the show and chat with Donnie.THAT'S what I miss the most.

That's exactly around the same time that I stopped watching BET after these shows went off the air. BET should start another network and maybe call it "BET Old School". They could play loads of old videos, and not just the ones that have been played to death such as "Freeway Of Love", "Billie Jean", "Little Red Corvette", etc. They could get deep into the Midnight Star, Cameo, Shalamar, Lakeside, etc. videos....in other words, the videos that have not been shown in years. They also should approach Don Cornelius or whoever they need to contact, and start airing the old episodes of "Soul Train" from the 1970s and early 1980s. I would kill for a station like that.

You ain't lying. It's only a 30 minute show, once a week, that plays five or six videos that have been played to death over the years. Hell, with the small amount of time they have, they should be playing the ones we haven't seen in years.

If my memory is correct, Robert Johnson, the founder of BET, sold BET over to Viacom in 2001. I don't know how much money he received but it's safe to say it was in the hundreds of millions. He just announced on the BET Awards last month that he was stepping down from the CEO spot or something like that and passing the torch to a female who's name escapes me. I remember people here were concerned about BET's future and where it was going to go. Most here believed it was going to become more like MTV and unfortunately they were "dead on it".

I do see your point as well. The industry is at a point where these artists are popular. Just like back in tha day, those artists were popular (ohhh that was lovely back then music) Damn, it would be great if BET tried to open up new avenues nowadays though. Yes yes yes! There is so much they could be doing to shape popular music into something wonderful again. I do enjoy some of the popular music of today for entertainment purposes, but for the most part, it bores the hell out of me after awhile. I love your idea. There are so many independent artists out there that could benefit from BET taking time to expose them to bigger audiences.

See, that's just sad. lol That's what really bothers me too. This portrayal is what most people like to associate African-Americans with. And what is up with that damn whisper song from the Ying Yang twins. Dammit I'm so tired of hearing that every 5 minutes like it's just the shit. It ain't! And they don't particularly fit a description of the kinda man I want whispering in my ear and threatening to show me their "thang".

Amen! Lord, how I used to love those shows! When BET had it's Monday Music Marathon it seemed like it was every month that they had both hours of the show dedicated to Prince. That's where I saw not only the videos that MTV played like When Doves Cry,U Got the Look,Kiss and Little Red Corvette but also ones they didn't like Controversy,Sexuality,Automatic and Dirty Mind.

Don't even get me started on Rachel on Carribean Rhythms love
These were DEFINATELY BET's best days in my opinion!

I don't even watch BET anymore. It has become a joke.Nothing but sleazy hip-hop videos around the clock.I miss the days when they had "Video soul" with Donnie Simpson and Sharon Carter.I also miss "Video Vibrations".

Ummhmmm.

nod I really miss jammin to all my Reggae, Dancehall, and Soca videos. This show was ahead of its time. I really hated mad when they took this show off b/c alot of channels don't play Carribean music.

Those were the days... sigh

I was on Teen Summit when I was 13. biggrin

nod This was when BET was in its hey day. Donnie's interview's were informative and entertaining.

Indeed! And his show used to have alot of "old school" artists....folks like Chaka,Bootsy,Earth Wind and Fire,The OJays, and others would routinely visit the show and chat with Donnie.THAT'S what I miss the most.

What I miss the most are Donnie's shoes and sweaters. biggrin That man had style.

More than likely, that young latino chick will be the host, and prob a white guy.

That shit will NEVER happen. Trust me. They ain't foolish enough to let a white cat host 106 & Park. They learned their lesson when they let my white homie host Comic View and it flopped and they dropped his ass just like I told him they would.

Hopefully TVOne will end up making a better showing.

But of those of you complaining, how many of y'all wrote in to BET demanding better shows and more respectable images of Blacks? Hmmm?
See, it's easy to bash them but where were you when the shit was goin' down? Be a part of the solution and not the problem. Simply "turning the channel" isn't gonna help. Be active about change.
