hated it, but i'll probably see the movie anyway because i'm a fan of johnny cash. reese witherspoon is all wrong for june carter cash, and john cusack would have made SUCH a better JC than joaquin phoenix...though i can see how he could play a good johnny cash during the trucker speed years.

I wish Beverly D'Angelo was still young enough to play June Carter Cash. Remember her in Coal Miner's Daughter?

Fuckin' Reese Witherspoon is gonna fuck it up. lol

i just don't see the humor that made johnny and june what they were - there was the darkness and the rebellion and the dangerousness of their relationship, yeah yeah yeah, but what made it all charming and palatable was their humility and humor, which seemed pretty lacking at least in the trailer. i just saw sexy pretty people trying to look intense and iconic. whee. there was a reason they cast a comedic actor as ray charles...

I kinda don't like either of the two [nor Witherspoon, nor Phoenix] after having seen the trailer...

Hey, you just know they were trying to get more pretty people Oscar noms. With that voice, Reese can do The Perk and that's about it (even in Election, that was it).

Joaquin can scowl well. lol

Don't you love how Reese is whispering in every scene because if she were to talk normally, The Perk would be all too evident?

Excellent point. I will say, however, that I think Joaquin Phoenix is a really good actor. I'll reserve judgement until I see the whole thing.

shrug I saw the trailer this weekend and thought it looked good. I'm looking forward to it. I grew up with Johnny Cash albums in constant play in my house and have fond memories of his music, so just actually seeing the trailer kinda gave me goosebumps.

Cusack probably looks more like Cash, but I don't think he's right for the role. He seems content to play Lloyd Dobler again and again and again. Jaoquin and Reese are both good actors who pick more than their share of bland film roles. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but who knows? Maybe they can pull it off. And James Mangold has a weird assortment of films under his belt - Identity, Girl, Interrupted, Kate & Leopold and Cop Land. Of those, I only liked Identity. Sort of a weird pedigree to direct a biopic.

I think Phoenix can pull this off, I really do. I wasn't so sure, until I saw the trailer. He really has the young Man In Black persona down, and he REALLY sounds like him. I had to listen to it a second time to figure out that that wasn't the live version of "Ring of Fire", but rather Jaoquin singing!
