Appreciation Thread - The Spinners

I don't really hear too much about these guys on here, but we were listening to them today in work, and I think it's time for a thread!

Some of my favorites are:
"How Could I Let You Get Away"
"Cupid"
"I'll Be Around"
"Working my Way Back to You"
"Could it be I'm Falling in Love"

music
'Cause your friends don't dance, and if they don't dance... well, they're no friends of mine.

My boyfriend/partner/husband-type/significant other loves Spinners, so I always think of him when I hear them. I was listening to Monie Love's It's a Shame (My Sister) several years back, and he pointed out to me then that it was a sample of a Spinners song. I'm also a big Dionne Warwick fan, so I love Then Came You. I'll Be Around is a great track (and one of the best songs ever written according to the aforementioned partner-type).

don't have much of their stuff. Really dig It's A Shame though, since I'm a huge Stevie fan, I think that's one of the best songs he gave to another recording artist.

i have vague memories of napping lightly in the back seat of my mom's car while she was driving somewhere at night and "I'll Be Around" is playing. I squint open my eyes and see flashes and stretches of shadow roll past the backseat.

When I hear Phillipe's voice singing this song and the Rubberband Man, it brings back a lot of pleasant memories

One of the most enjoyable box sets I bought in recent years is "The Chrome Collection",a dazzling 3-CD set that contains all the Spinners music you could ever want

All the hits are accounted for,and it contains the key album tracks. My only complaint is that includes the single edits of "The Rubberband Man" and a few other hits.I get pissed when single edits are used on multi-disc box sets. There's simply no excuse for that! But it does contain some excellent liner notes, featuring a great interview with songwriter/producer Thom Bell. And the remastered sound is just amazing.I highly recommend this,y'all.

This is my favorite Spinners song.I've loved it ever since I first heard it in 1975.Interestingly,after all this time,we still do not know who the guest female vocalist is.In the liner notes to the box set, producer Thom Bell refuses to say who it is,only that is is a "popular singer" who didn't want to be identified! Bell also hints that the voice may have been electronically altered so the identity would not be revealed.I have a 1975 epidode of 'Soul Train' with The Spinners performing this song, and one of the guys in the group actually lip-syncs the female part...lol...it's hilarious.

So,I guess this remains one of 70s soul music's greatest mysteries lol

lol I always wondered abut her voice...

Speaking of Spinners mysteries, what is Phillipe Wynne really saying at the end of "One of A Kind(Love Affair)"? Y'all know the line..."You just gotta( ) her, Yeah"...." I know what it SOUNDS like he's saying, I just need some verification, lol ....

I brought this box set back in 2003 and it's definitely a collection every Spinners fan should want in there collection. Disc 3, which is where the John Edwards era begins, brought back many memories. Rhino Records did this much justice by making this the definitive Spinners collection. Casual and hardcore fans alike should dish out $60 dollars for this one! 5-star all of a kind set. headbang

In 1973,radio DJs heard this and the record label was forced to edit this part out of the single version. You can still hear it on the album version though.

I always wonder whether if their 1975 LP, Pick Of The Litter or if their 1973-self-titled album are the best albums. I would personally pick the Pick Of The Litter because it's just has many classics that I grew up on like Games People Play, Love or Leave, and one of my fave Spinners tunes, All That Glitters Ain't Gold and the production on that record is flawless. Their 1973-self titled album is just too overrated for me (just like their 1974 LP, Mighty Love). What do you think?
