Jay Farrar/Son Volt

Ok i have heard the newest solo from Farrar, and I tend to like it.

and I know Son Volt with the new line up has a new album that came out last week thats a completely new lineup other than farrar.

what I would like to know is if its any good, and if its like his solo stuff, I know some of the other son volt, is a ummmm for lack of a better phrase at the moment jam band kinda feel.

I haven’t heard Jay Farrar’s solo album and I was completely unaware that Son Volt had a new album out, but now that I know it exists I'll almost certainly buy it. I really just adore the first two Son Volt albums, Trace in particular. Tear-Stained Eye and Windfall are perfect songs. It’s a shame that their career got so messed up, because I think if you compare Farrar to his former partner in Uncle Tupelo (Jeff Tweedy, now of Wilco), Farrar’s a superior songwriter, though he’s a weaker vocalist.

I would never have characterized them as a jam band, unless they’ve radically changed their sound. To me on their first two records they were very firmly an alt-country band along the lines of the Scud Mountain Boys, Old 97s, Whiskeytown and those types of acts.
