Eurythmics

Anybody into them? I'm an enormous fan. If anyone is interested in getting into them, here is a brief summary of their career.

In the Garden (1981)- This is a very solid debut, featuring a breathier, sexier vocal style from Annie behind some experimental and beautiful tracks. It showcases a dark side and is much less accessible than most of their other material. Includes "Never Gonna Cry Again" and "Belinda" as singles. A

Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (1983)- Rather than a sellout, this album simply adds more experimentation and features a much more masculine, forceful Annie on vocals. The synth starts to dominate even more, and the beats for which they are known are born here. Includes "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," "Love Is a Stranger," "The Walk," "This Is the House" as singles, all of which were released before the album. The B-sides are fantasic, particularly "Step on the Beast" and "Invisible Hands." A+

Touch (1983)- This album adds funk to the synth with some great slap bass. Likely their most classic album, it is also the most critically praised. The beats are fast and furious and this album also featured a remix album of vocal and instrumental dance mixes. It features the singles "Here Comes the Rain Again," "Who's That Girl?" and "Right By Your Side." A+

1984: For the Love of Big Brother (1984)- This is the soundtrack to the film "1984," based upon Orwell's classic novel. It suits the movie and the book perfectly, dispersing an intensely eerie and empty soundscape that is cold and paranoid. The mood is sustained throughout. It features the singles "Sexcrime [1984]" and "Julia," an incredibly haunting ballad. There is not a single weak track. A+

Be Yourself Tonight (1985)- This album marks a complete turnaround in their sound, easing the synths for a rockier, more soulful sound. It is stridently confident and a renaissance of sorts for Annie, who admits to being happy for the first time in a decade during this album. It plays like a greatest hits album and features "Would I Lie to You," "There Must Be an Angel (Playing With My Heart)," "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves," "It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back)" and "I Love You Like a Ball and Chain." A

Revenge (1986)- This album takes the rock to a higher level. Its tour almost felt like an arena rock show. It is weighed down by a few weak tracks, but its highlights are worth it. It features the singles "Missionary Man," "Thorn in My Side," "When Tomorrow Comes" and "The Miracle of Love." B

Savage (1987)- This album marks a return to experimentation. It is a theme album, and is paralleled by a video compilation of all the songs in a different sequence. It is wonderfully fruity but poignant at once, campy and stylish. The schizophrenia ubiquitous in this album is evident in the videos as well, with Annie taking on many different, and at times opposing, personalities. It contains the singles "Beethoven (I Love to Listen to)," "I Need a Man," "Shame" and "You Have Placed a Chill in My Heart." A

We Too Are One (1989)- This is their final album before breaking up in 1990. They go out in style. Perfect pop with a foundation in emotion, it is very accessible, but failed to live up to the commercial expectations that it generated. It is weighed down by some questionable tracks, but its highlights are stunning. It contains the mesmerizing "Don't Ask Me Why," the reflective "Angel," the encouraging "When the Day Goes Down," the mockery of "King and Queen of America," "Revival" and "(My, My) Baby's Gonna Cry." B+

Peace (1999)- This album marks their comeback, and what a comeback it was. It sounds like an Annie Lennox solo album, but Dave's studio touch and guitar are evident as well. As suggested by the title, the album is mostly gentle, but it has its upbeat moments as well. It showcases much growth, wisdom and maturity. It features the mockingly self-referential "17 Again," "I Saved the World Today," and the breathtaking "Peace Is Just a Word." A

For me, after Be Yourself Tonight, The Eurythmics went off track. They never reached the kind of intensity I felt in their music before.
I adore Touch and the Touch remix album (know that one?) and even the 1984 OST. Just adore Greetings From A Dead Man, allthough it seems a bit long.
And of course; Annie Lennox's Diva. Nice, nice, nice.

I love the Eurythmics, as well as Annie Lennox solo work... growing up I was the only one to like their music, but that hardly stopped me...and of course, "Love Song For A Vampire" is one of my absolute favourites razz I spent an entire LARP singing that song over and over, gave the other participants an eerie experience, since our characters wanted to be vampires, and the other people thought we were... made them really scared...and on that note, check out my new profile pics! mr.green

I'm a huge Eurythmics fan. Saw them 8 times in concert when I was a youngster.

If you can find any, have a listen to their early work as 'The Tourists'.

You should also check out Daves solo album 'Greetings From The Gutter', it's a corker.
Some people are like Slinkies...

They're good for nothing but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

something about that band drives me insane and I must turn off their not-particularly bad songs whenever they come on the radio (every damn day)

I think mostly my distaste comes from Annie's look during the 'sweet dreams' era - I hated that with a passion, just as I hate Diane Keaton's overall fashion sense. the whole victor/victoria thing

Peace is a fantastic album. I love it when artists who have been around for a while do something a little more reflective (including Prince). 'I Saved The World Today' is just beautiful.

There has been talk of a new studio album on an unofficial site- www.vibber.dk/eurythmistan. However, Annie herself is definitely in the studio preparing a new album!

Just so you know, there was a greatest hits issued in 1991. Both the US version and the UK version are inadequate, although the UK version more closely assembles a worthy collection of hits. They also released a live album in 1993 which collected recordings from concerts spannning a time period of 1983-1989. Again, many important songs are missing. For the most accurate portrayal of their hits, I would suggest purchasing the VHS or the DVD of their Greatest Hits, which includes 21 videos. Not only is it a more comprehensive set, the visuals are stunning and affirm that Eurythmics were indeed pioneers of the video medium. They also have official video releases for:

  • Sweet Dreams tour video
  • Revenge tour video
  • Savage video collection (comprises the whole album)
  • We Two are One Too video collection(comprises most of We Too Are One plus some extras)
  • Peacetour video

Apparently, another compilation of their songs is being released on Tuesday. It seems a bit of a mixed bag to me and doesn't seem to have much flow. It also is missing some very important singles, namely "Here Comes the Rain Again," "Love Is a Stranger," "Would I Lie to You?," "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves," "Missionary Man," "Thorn in My Side," "I Need a Man," "You Have Placed a Chill in My Heart," "Don't Ask Me Why" and "Angel." I'll probably buy it anyway. lol It's called Les Essentiels and apparently has been released in France already.

  • Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)
  • There Must Be an Angel (Playing With My Heart)
  • The Miracle of Love
  • Who's That Girl?
  • This City Never Sleeps
  • Somebody Told Me
  • It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back)
  • Better to Have Lost in Love (Than Never to Have Loved At All)
  • Right By Your Side
  • In This Town
  • I Remember You
  • I Need You
  • Brand New Day
  • This Is the House

Great topic! biggrin
I've always loved the Eurythmics, since i was a little girl and my sisters was listening to them all the time. My dad also likes them, and i bought Peace for him in 1996. Love the sound of that album, esp. I saved the world today Just like Haystack said, more reflective. Got to love the 80s material too though wink

Thanks for all the info on the albums Moonbeam! I'll check out the new compilation and some others. And i'll be looking forward to any new material they're working on smile
