Alice Coltrane - WOW. I just bought "Transcendence" this weekend. Wow. SO beautiful. I listened to it last night to help get to sleep and cover up the sound of my downstairs neighbors' drunken screaming and ranting...it did the trick, but my experience of falling asleep to the music was pretty trippy...I'd fall in and out of sleep slowly with the crescendos of the music...the closest thing I can compare it to is having water lapping over your head while you're floating in water.
This is an amazing album. Anyone else love it?

By marriage. She played piano in his band not long after they got hitched. She was formally trained and had recorded and toured with other jazz musicians before she met John. Her latest album (a different one from the one Anxiety is talking about) was released sometime this month. I intend on learning a lot more about Alice Coltrane, and probably through her, John Coltrane. What a couple of amazingly spiritual people, just judging from their music. Their music is to a highter power as espresso is to caffeinated beverages. I've always been a fan of "A Love Supreme", but I never really delved deeper than listening to that album whenever I was in the mood to hear it.
Alice's "Transcendence" (a recent re-release of her 1977 album) is a melding of Eastern and Western spiritual music - it's a blend of blues, gospel and Indian-influenced sounds, with Alice and other singers singing in sanscrit. It's the most calming, humbling, most beautiful thing I've ever heard, and having a listen to it when you're completely still and calm has such an amazing effect. I highly recommend this.
