Raphael Saadiq was discovered by Prince?

I just checked out www.raphaelsaadiq.com and the BIO says that Raphael was discovered at 18 when he got the gig as bass player for Prince and Sheila E on the Parade tour? I thought Brown Mark was still on this tour. I know he was on some of it anyway. Anybody know more details about this?

Raphael's new album is great if you like any of his stuff or TTT check it out. Solid effort.

Raphael was chosen as the bassplayer for Sheila E.'s band at the time.In late 1986,she did a brief tour opening for Lionel Ritchie and Raphael was in her band. After the tour ended,Prince wanted to sign Raphael and his band (Tony Tone Toni) to Paisley Park Records, but the deal fell through. On their 1988 hit "Born Not to Know",they sing "Things are gettin crazy,I ain't wearin' Paisley",but there were no hard feelings. They joined Prince onstage at one of the "Lovesexy" shows.
