It seems to me that labels put payola behind any artists they have doubts about like J-Lo or Jessica Simpson. Payola really didnt help Jennifer Lopez on her last album cause it only went platinum. All of her other albums at least sold over 3 million. And they had her single "Get Right" ALL OF THE TIME on the radio. Nobody really seemed to like it, so I believe it was the label's intentions to make us like it. [Edited 7/26/05 0:55am] If it gets you to sleep that Tommy Mottola, Usher's manager and a major stockholder in Clear Channel, got Usher a lot of airplay because people honestly wanted it....live in your delusions.... And I liked "Get Right" more than any other J. Lo single so far. Why would they need to put payola behind something that they know for sure will sell millions? Radio stations are of course gonna play what the mass whats to hear - this helps their ratings. And I cant tell you how many times Ive listened to the radio and heard somebody call in and request "that new Usher song" - not that I was counting anyway. And its not just the radio, he always had the most the requested video and usually got the #1 spot in countdowns and charts because "they" (his fans) voted for it; his album sold 9 millions copies because his "they" (his fans) bought it. Whats delusional about that? Read that article again - they put payola behind artists who aint really built to be stars like Jessica Simpson and J-Lo (who cant really thing - remember Ashanti used to sing under her vocals to make her sound good). They wanna convince us to like that shit. And speaking of "Get Right", that song was originally an Usher song which was not used and leftover from his Confessions album. I got the original version. So if you liked J-Lo's verison, you probably would like Usher's as well. But me personally, I thought the song overall was weak. J-Lo's last album was her lowest selling album - that sould tell you something.

Maybe this is how Prince got popular again.
Payola is a given in the music bizz; I'm surprised nobody caught on, until now. Sony is about making profit, so why would it surprise anyone? I did have my suspicions about JLo; nobody I know even likes her music--who sane would? All you others say Hell Yea!!

Lo's vocals (or whatever female vocals that are on there) which make "Get Right" sound appealing. It really would break your heart if Usher popurality was due to people getting paid for playing those CDs (and maybe "calling in" as well), so maybe we'll just pretend it never happened. Usher, the new king of pop. "Rythmn City" is better than "Purple Rain" .....

Just another thought on this payola stuff:
I know most of the payola backlash has been focused on artists like J.Lo, Jessica Simpson and Celine Dion, but they are hardly the only artists that the record companies bribed radio stations to play. They were mentioned because they were all members of Sony Music, which just happened to be caught first. Tommy Mottola may have tried to screw over Mariah Carey royally after their divorce, but I'm sure she was as big a beneficiary of payola when they were married as any of the other artists mentioned here, if not even more so. (Hey, I love Mariah, , and I think she is incredibly talented, but I would be naive to think that she didn't receive any help in getting her singles played on the radio.) Heck, even Limp Bizkit was part of the payola scam. I'm curious to find out how many other artists and/or labels (Jive Records, anyone) were into the payola. You don't really believe that Britney or 'Nsync sold all those records on their own, do you? Do you really think LFO could have gotten a hit single with "Summer Girls" because people wanted to hear that piece of crap? And what about MTV's role in the payola scandal with the reality shows? No one outside of Ozzy Osbourne's family would have known who his daughter Kelly was without the hit reality show, let alone allow her to record an album. And remember that Jessica Simpson had released her most recent album, "Under This Skin," a full six months before "Newlyweds" debuted on MTV, and her initial sales bombed. And don't even get me started on her sister Ashlee.

In the case of Kelly, I think Sony and MTV combined to release the CD for the kitsch (if "Papa" got any airplay, it was also for that reason) of it but I doubt "payola" had anything to do with it. The single and album didn't do well at all although I realy like her new CD and single, which is new wave oreinated on and on indie Sancutary.
