Riding the wave: MJ Dangerous Bucharest concert DVD due July 25th I recently started collecting footage from all Michael Jackson tours (or should I say tour ),
and while browsing for specifics on a fan-site, I came across this announcement: --- MICHAEL JACKSON Live In Bucharest: The Dangerous Tour. Released in the U.K on Monday 25th July 2005. DVD Track list: 1. Main Title 2. Jam 3. Wanna Be Startin’ Something 4. Human Nature 5. Smooth Criminal 6. I Just Can’t Stop Loving You 7. She’s Out Of My Life 8. I Want You Back / The Love You Save 9. I’ll Be There 10. Thriller 11. Billie Jean 12. Working Day And Night 13. Beat It 14. Will You Be There 15. Black Or White 16. Heal The World 17. Man In The Mirror 18. Credits --- About the concert: Michael sold the film rights to his 'Dangerous' concert in Bucharest, Rumania to HBO for $20 million for the rights to air the show. The deal was the highest ever paid for a live concert. This special received the highest TV ratings in the history of HBO, and Michael was honored with a Cable Ace Award. The Bucharest concert, performed on 1st October 1992 was broadcast live on radio and shown on TV in 61 countries.
It is on pre-sale here. Is anyone going to pick this up, despite the goods having been televised to an audience of millions, being recorded and widely spread amongst collectors? Note, this is officially released by Sony. Aside from a HIStory tour-video issued on VHS on the Asian market, this is the first ever concert to be released in the ancient world.

Didn't know that. Maybe that is why it is UK-only?

see, I could never knowingly buy a dvd from a man
wearing white sox and those damn short trousers.. I might even enjoy the music but I can't get past those fucking feet and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I have seen this concert before. WATCH the "Human Nature" performance, it is one of the few that isn't Lip Synced. His voice is so off key it is disgusting.
To many nose jobs ruin your voice. That is why 95% of this concert is lip synced.

Very true. When he is in an arena or stadium and wearing non-contrasting clothing, the hand- and footmovements tend to be hard to register when watched from a distance. Hence the white socks, hence the shiny gloves. I don't think it is that bad looking, his average costume is much worse!

To many nose jobs ruin your voice. That is why 95% of this concert is lip synced. Actually laryngitis which resulted in throat surgery very shortly after that concert. It was a shit one to release because it was really late in the tour. The earlier shows were better and the lip syncing was to a bare minimum.

I want the 'BAD' tour..
That 'Dangerous' show in Bucharest could do with some serious post production. ...Your coochie gonna swell up and fall apart...

I think I could pretty much make up a second leg show of the Bad tour with all the clips and MTV documentaries I've got from that era. Fuckin' amazing that was. He's never topped it and never will, obviously.

Wasn't the 'BAD' show, shown on tv?
If so, which show was it & is it online? I seem 2 remember watching it as a kid.. ...Your coochie gonna swell up and fall apart...

That 'Dangerous' show in Bucharest could do with some serious post production. Yeah, it looks like a tv-broadcast of a concert, not like a concert-video. I figured that it might even be directed live, though that would surprise me. I surely doesn't hold up to the standards in the DVD-era. If someone has an actual DVD-version, I am curious to find out if they did some postproduction. Everyone seems to have missed the remark in my initial post, but I meant to imply that the Bad-tour was the blueprint for the Dangerous- and HIStory-tours, up to the point that the latter two were reprises with songs from the current album worked into the set. I mean, same songs, same band, thus same arrangements, a lot of the same gimmicks in the stage-act. I bet there even were a lot of the same people in the audience. So far I've seen concertfootage of two Bad-shows (Osaka and Yokohama) and Dangerous in Bucharest, and two HIStory-shows (Auckland and Munich). I still need to see the Victory-tour, and there apparantly is a registration of a private show in Brunei that is highly rated. Has anyone seen that show?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Only seen parts of Brunei but I have the audio to it all.
I've got Triumph on DVD too. Personally I think that's much better than Victory. Ironically from the endless footage I've seen of MJ concerts, the Victory tour seems like the audience is the most subdued. Apart from Japanese concerts of course where they're all like that all the time. People always yap on about MJ's peak being Thriller, but outside the USA Bad was pretty much the same, if not bigger, seeing as he barely stepped foot outside America for the Thriller era. Just one or two instances I can think of. The aftermath of Thriller seems bigger than the time itself. [Edited 7/21/05 12:41pm]

Just one or two instances I can think of. The aftermath of Thriller seems bigger than the time itself. I'd say that with 'Bad' he ascended the throne of being an international superstar, touring under his own name for the first time, indeed building on the aftermath of Thriller, where he was 'stuck' with the Jackson 5. I have been examining the tour-specifics, and it occured to me that his appeal apparently had lessened come 1988; while the Victory-tour was staged in stadiums, the Bad-tour was 'confined' to arena's, but only in Northern America. In the rest of the world he reaped the fruits of super-stardom. The situation in his homeland somehow didn't quite fit a man of his stature around that time. Him abandoning the US on conceding tours seemed like the logical consequence to that conclusion. He broke attendance- and grossing- records everywhere in the world, whereas the records he broke in the US were only during the Jackson 5-era.

Erm, he specifically said in the US he wanted more intimate shows. I dunno what to make of that.
Anyway, he was still HUGE in the US by '88 but in general by the late 80s the multi-million selling acts were the likes of Bonjovi and Def Leppard. All the "hair" bands as we call them,

I don't believe a word of it. He played the same show through-out, some minor differences in the second leg withstanding. And, he did about twenty cities on the Bad-tour, dropping all minor markets, whereas he did about sixty on the Jackson 5-tours. There is not much of a difference in staging a stadium-show or an arena-show. Maybe they figured it would be too exhausting considering the schedule in the rest of the world. But entirely not touring the States since... There must be something behind it - he could be billing his comeback-tour as his first in twenty years (in some states). Intriguing

Well the Dangerous tour was set to have a US leg, but for obvious reasons it was cut short. By early 93 I really remember it being a huge Jacko renaissance, with the aftermath of the Oprah interview getting him to come out of his shell and actually act human in public.
Later for HIStory tour (utter shite anyway) the music wasn't exactly welcomed with open arms apart from the out-of-place piece of commercial wank 'You Are Not Alone' just shoved on the album for the US market - well that's how it seems to me, even 'Come Toegther' appearing on it sounds more fitting than that.

I'd love to see a second-leg tour itinerary...
Were there actual dates booked? Tickets sold? He cut the world tour short due to the allegations made during the first leg, so the second leg may very well have been still in the planning stages. I agree on the HIStory-tour. But the same goes for the Dangerous-tour, the only difference being the much stronger album that's backing it. Like I said, it is essentially one tour, sometimes having a halve year break, sometimes a two year break

Actually the Dangerous tour already had 2 legs. It was the third leg that got cancelled: http://www.neverland-vall...s-main.htm

Actually, I'm just looking at all the average venue capacities and I didn't realise that Madison Square Garden only holds 19,000. That's tiny.

Yeah, I looked at the schedules on MichealJacksonForSale.com, they have all the attendance listed as well.
I need to do some research and learn about the scale of the US-leg of the Dangerous tour. The album itself proved to be a further decline in sales, so he would probably be forced to enter the arena-circuit for this tour. Now what if he had started the Dangerous-tour in the States?

i just find it amazing that after the allegations, he could still sell out STADIUMS with the history tour!

How hold are u? Remember those were no big deal in europe. Even here in 95, Scream and History were all over Mtv and Vh1. He was and still is king in the U.K. Kissing LMP on the MTV awards in 94 was the jump the shark moment for Michael Jackson. Everybody waited to see what he would do next. I'll say it again, when he walked out on the 94 MTv awards he was the still the biggest guy in music. Once he kissed LMP the mystic was gone. It was a cheap stunt and transparent. Forget double cd or price, jew me.... sue me, lip sync tour, dehydrated at MSG..... Michael jumped the shark with the LMP kiss.. [Edited 7/21/05 21:57pm] [Edited 7/21/05 21:57pm]
