U2 - The Best Of 1990-2000 - Cheek's Edition

My friend asked me to copy U2's Best Of 1990-2000 for her. After some hesitating I decided that I'd rather make my own compilation for her 'cos I wasn't too satisfied with the original tracklist and the new mixes of "pop-songs".
I also included "Elevation" & "Walk On" though these singles came out in 2001...

Here's the tracklist:

Even Better Than The Real Thing
Mysterious Ways
Beautiful Day
Elevation
Electrical Storm (William Orbit Mix)
Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
Stay (Faraway, So Close!)
Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of
Discothéque (album version)
The Fly
Staring At The Sun (album version)
Numb (new mix)
Miss Sarajevo
Please
One
Walk On
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me

total running time: 77:52

Please, tell me what you think! smile
Is it good or bad or whatever... smile

P.S.: If you made your own compilations then please post them here! Thanks!!! biggrin

I have to say, I much prefer the earlier compilation to the 1990-2000 one, as I generally prefer the older material.
They are both flawed, though, mostly because of the reliance on singles, when U2 are much more of an "albums" band.
So, I don't envy you trying to pick the best songs but with still a representation of the popular songs.

For e.g. I always, always hated Mysterious Ways, it just seems so lightweight and pointless and that horrible guitar sound..barf

On the plus side, though.. One worship GREAT song! Wonderful build up to the end part too mushy

..Wild Horses also deserves its place in your list ;nod:
Electrical Storm, Hold Me.., Stay..All classics too nod

My absolute fave U2 song of this period has to be The Ground Beneath Her Feet. - the most spirited performance U2 have captured in the studio for years.

Great band, with some great still songs to come, too, I am sure

PS

I think U2 need to do a DVD retrospective with live performances throughout the years. There are some amazing, and very different, live versions that far outclass their studio counterparts and have yet to make official release.

E.g. there was a short section of the Lovetown Tour shown in the UK some years back with an awesome version of All Along The Watchtower and a great Desire too

mushy

Pretty much got all the big hits from the era, but I would've found a way to sneak Lemon on there (probably in place of Miss Sarajevo).

Best of 1990-2000 is probably U2's biggest mis-step. The 90's were a time of experimentation for the band, and instead of documenting that, they presented a prettied up version for the masses. As much as I've liked the last two albums, they never would've happened had Pop not been seen as a failure. Remixing the Pop and Zooropa songs just seems like revisionist history to me. Hopefully when they get around to releasing a definitive greatest hits set, they include the originals on it.

I love edits for compilations. But I've talked about that before.

I'm still making up my art. If I post a project, I like to include the packaging I made to go with it.

It's nice. And as it was, their version was definitely in need of revision. As is the 2nd disc. I like how you put my 2 favorite U2 songs back to back - Stay and Wild Horses. Bonus points for that. wink
