Wait, are we talking about new artists or old ones? confuse

either, as long as they've released a new album this year.

Now before you start...there's no "angry american" on this one. This album is Toby returning the the music early in his career, pure complexless country...fun, clever and down to earth. Crittically aclaimed and top-seller for a reason,...best album of the year so far...and a hard one to top.

Willie Mason - where the humans eat

If you don't have this one already you missed out on the most surprising newcommer this year. Bob Dylan reborn...and that's NOT going overboard. Close second.

Willy nelson - It always will be

willy's strongest album in over a decade. The album I , as a willy fan, have been waiting for for years...he may be well over 70, but he can still tach these young cats a few tricks...He prooves again why he is, to coin a phrase, the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be.
It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

I'm on board with the Decemberists, and I really love the Books album whose name escapes me at the moment. I've mentioned it to the point of redundancy, but my album of the year is the Go-Betweens' Oceans Apart, even if the mastering was completely butchered, leaving the album sounding like a third generation bootleg in places.

I’m going to cheat and count a re-issue: I’ve replaced my vinyl copy of "The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society” with the new 3 disc edition, which is a model of what a re-issue ought to be - lovely packaging, mono and stereo versions of the albums, tons of non-lp songs from that period and a lengthy and informative booklet. The album itself is fantastic, one of the all-time greats - sparkling melodies, imaginative arrangements, clever lyrics, everything you'd want a Kinks record to be.

I almost bought this yesterday, but I went with Lloyd Cole's Bad Vibes instead as it was considerably marked down. I'd already blown my budget for music this month so I felt compelled to go for the bargain. That may have been a big mistake in retrospect, because that Cole album sounds pretty dreary.

Totally agree with you on Oceans Apart and on Sleater Kinney's Woods. It seems to be a theme this year, great music botched by intentionally "challenging" production.

Hold Steady, on the other hand, is clear as a bell! The singer's voice is raspy enough.

The melodies are still there on Sleater-Kinney's 'The Woods' so the roughed up sound doesn't really bother me.

People made similar complaints years ago when PJ Harvey released 'Rid Of Me' and now that is considered a classic record.

I don't why, but I never batted an eye when PJ did it. I LOVED that record from the get-go, always been my favorite of hers. I think maybe the distortion worked there because it was such a blatantly intentional rough sound throughout. The Woods just has touches of it in some places, and then it's really heavy in others. It just doesn't seem to have an consistent idea behind it (and in fact, the guitarist even said in an interview that during recording she told the producer that the needles were hitting the red, and the producer said something like, "let's just leave it, to keep it raw." I also think PJ's always mocking cock-rock, so it fits the music a bit more.

hmmm

I've realized that I may have lied earlier in this thread.

I think my 1 album this year so far REALLY is:

Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning

I've played this SO MUCH. It's my unofficial wake-up CD right now. I played it again this morning and realized it's the ONLY album I've bought this year from which I know and love every single song. DAMN GOOD STUFF.
