Anyway, if it has a timbaland aping beat, even if real instruments are used, then its neo soul. A term that is hard to define anyway. Its all linked anyway. Nope. It was originally called Neo Classic Soul back when it first got its name around 95, mainly due to D'Angelo. They eventually dropped the "Classic" and just started calling it Neo Soul. Brandy and Mary J are R&B, Neo Soul is usually more conscious/sophisticated lyrics and employs jazz elements and that 70s sound. Timbaland was and never will be ever mentioned in the Neo Soul sentence. Fair enough. But I hear and see videos, I can hear the beats to some songs (more modern neo) sound like timbaland style minimalistic beats, but ur right though proberly. Peace.

I am sick of this label, "Neo-Soul". I don't think any of these artists deserve to be called that. I think it should be called "Progressive Soul". Classic Soul back in the day had this sort of spirit and intensity that I see very little of in these artists. Remember The Isley Brothers in the early 60's? or what about Sly and his Family Stone in their humble beginnings? They had some romping stomping expressive intensity that made them truly soulful. These so-called "Neo-Soul" acts are all laid back and shit.
I think "Progressive Soul" is a better term for the new wave of acts because these are artists that try not to sound mainstream, and they're trying to push things forward and provide an alternative to the crap that's taken over mainstream R&B. I agree, even though I really hate more modern neo soul. Why they gotta act so pretensious? Budu still thinks she's some sorta african god. I dont see why. Fuck her and her gang of snobs. No need to have that image.

The only so called neo soul artist that I can stomach are A. Keys and Van hunt and i'm not even sure if most people would lump them into that category. I think they are very talented artists and I know they will outlast that title.

Sometimes I think I'm the only one on here that fully appreciated their last LP One Step Forward. "Saravah," "J'veux d'la musique," "Brothers & Sisters (avec Morgan Heritage)" :: gems.

He needs to quit messing around and make another album. It's not like he's doing a followup to Thriller. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

If you wanna just be introduced without being bored there is Soul-funk artist named Cody Chestnutt (he is the definite truth) You'll love the 'The Seed 2.0' go to mtv.com or launch.com and listen to it Plugedit! [Edited 7/20/05 12:24pm] Sorry, I know he has potential, but headphone masterpiece was mainly a bore. It all depends on what you like -- I love his music because of the laid back vibe- he's also a very good writer to me -- I like when he said "We can be Kings in Adidas" - "Thank you Jesus for my momma Thank you bitches for my money" -- Cool as shit to me!
