But in every interview she's ever given, that's how she sounds. She just annunciates things very clearly and it can come off sounding a bit stuffy. British? No. Clean diction? Yes.
i have a "few" video tapes that span the length of her career up to ray of light. there are interviews back as far as erotica where she was speaking with very clear annunciation. it was part of the image change and i think she just stuck with it. in truth or dare she was still very midwest meets nyc but she must have taken some speech and voice lessons to clear things up. it got even more obvious after her evita voice lessons. the "accent" has certainly been at an all time high since she relocated to the uk but its by no means anything new.

from the editoral of Vogue
I’m always amazed when I read the things that fat, ugly, balding male journalists allow themselves to write about Madonna, their fabulously well preserved contemporary. “Menopausal” and “the old girl”, were a couple of the milder descriptions that appeared after her performance at the Live 8 concert in Hyde Park. Yeah, right, Mr Love God, and just look at you, I always think, on reading the painfully misogynistic prose of these barrel-shaped boobies. However, I suspect that the secret of the Madonna phenomenon is a certain restlessness which ensures that she doesn’t sit around fulminating about patronising press but is instinctively always moving on to the next thing, and the next, and the one after that. The trouble is that, at 46, you begin to run out of next things. However fabulously well preserved, an intelligent woman (and Madonna is certainly that) knows that there is no mileage after a certain point in pretending to be luscious. The result is simply sinister, as a brief tour d’horizon of Botoxed and desperate former beauties will confirm. So, what’s the alternative? In the States there is no alternative. Unless you’re Barbara Bush, you just carry on getting thinner and thinner, more and more wide-eyed, sadder and madder, until you vanish altogether. You’d think Madonna might have been able to thrive in France, where allure is reckoned to be ageless, but the French are so intolerant of eccentricity (and their music scene is so peculiar). Besides, she’s married to an Englishman. So, what have the Brits to offer a 46-year-old rock star — apart from an unpleasant claque of paunchy, sex-starved male journalists? Actually, more than you’d imagine. One always thinks of Latin nations as being supremely matriarchal, but in Britain we entertain a long and robust tradition of pale, willowy beauties who deal with the transition from flower-like nymph to middle age and older by becoming Formidable. You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

Yeah, but she wasn't born with it, which is the point most of us don't use the voice we were born with. to be completely factual, none of us were "born" with any specific accent; our accents are all learned and can be unlearned. most of us use different voices and intonations depending on the audience and its intended response or impression. i certainly don't speak with that nasty, ugly sounding philadelphia accent with which i was born. am i trying to be something i'm not? no. i am just conscious of how i sound and i want to be perceived in a particular manner in specific circumstances. we all do it. madonna gets knocked for it, though, because she's madonna. . theVelvetRoper said: sosgemini said: i will never forget the Donahue (Phil for those too young) episode that had an audience full of americans who had moved to england (in uk) and then an audience full of londoners who had moved to the US (in Phil's studio).... all of the american exports had co-opted the british accent while all of the brits had maintained their native tounge.... Right. Because they want to come off as more "upper-class and refined" and they somehow associate the British with that lifestyle. For what reason, I really don't know. In some cases that can be true, but, in all fairness, as an American expatriate to Europe I can tell you in absolute honesty that your natural accent changes once you live overseas for a period of years. Alot of it has to do with simply going through day to day life just trying to make your English understood to those who speak English with you. What usually happens is that after a certain amount of time your English becomes very "clipped" and enunciated, which comes from the habit of speaking slowly and deliberately in daily conversation, ensuring that, well, people can actually COMPREHEND you when you speak...until you actually have the opportunity to live in a foreign land, the funniest thing is that you never really realize how many dialects of English we have at home in the US. I for example, am a black woman with southern parents, from the midwest, and was educated in boarding schools and later college educated; if I break it down onto paper and into actual verbal exercises that means I speak THREE very distinct dialects of American English! I have my "Ebonics/Southern English", my "midwestern nasal whine" and then my "standardized" English. It's weird, but, over time your "standardized" English becomes clipped and staccato and yes, a very real part of you if you're not at home in the US.... ... oddly enough the other dialects never go away 100%...you just need to get back into the place where they originated and resuscitate them once in a while , but yes, it's pretty normal for your standard accent to change from years of speaking in that over-enunciated way we need to (over here) in order to be clearly understood....

That's weird, cos I have American relatives who have been living here for over 10 years and haven't changed their accents at all. And the English tend to speak faster than Americans anyway so any US residents wouldn't have to slow down their speech - and NO American would ever have to change their dialect to be understood unless they were perhaps from the south. It's more like the other way around with the English and our huge array of accents having trouble being understood in the US.

Yeah, well they don't have Guy's juicy mockney cock 2 play with every night. Some people need 2 get over the accent, I know people who moved within the same country (less than 100 km) & their accents have changed according 2 the regional dialect.
