Vogue

England is home, Madonna says

By Karen Thomas, USA TODAY
Don't look for Madonna to return to her Midwest roots anytime soon.
England, she tells the August Vogue, is home forever.

"The last thing I thought I would do is marry some laddish, shooting, pubgoing nature lover — and the last thing he thought he was going to do was marry some cheeky girl from the Midwest who doesn't take no for an answer!"

In the interview, which arrives Thursday, Madonna says she has mellowed. She says she wears sensible shoes around her country estate and caters to a beloved flock of chickens, and her children, Lola, 8, and Rocco, 4, don't watch TV.

She even shows off her whopping wedding album (until now seen only by her "closest friends") from her 2000 marriage to director Guy Ritchie. So, for the record: She was married in a traditional, cinched-waisted gown with a long train and veil.

She acknowledges that she didn't fall in love with England initially, but since meeting Ritchie, 36, Madonna, 46, has learned to ride horses, shoot and fish. Her preferred mode of transportation: bicycle. And she "could be a connoisseur of ales if I wanted to."

Ashcombe, the 1,000-acre estate the family calls home, was once the home of the late photographer Cecil Beaton, and Madonna says she and Ritchie were immediately in love with it.

"To me, Ashcombe is a reflection of me and my husband in many ways, because it reflects our willingness to make a commitment. Not necessarily to each other but to the idea of having a home somewhere, instead of living like gypsies."

This whole "Madonna's pretentious and talks with a British accent" is nonsense. Just another example of everyone jumping on a bandwagon that reinforces their hate for her. If you've paid even the slightest bit of attention to her, you'll know that she's ALWAYS talked that way. Whether that's phoney or not, who knows. But in every interview she's ever given, that's how she sounds. She just annunciates things very clearly and it can come off sounding a bit stuffy. British? No. Clean diction? Yes.

Madonna is just another in a long list of celebrities who love the sound of their own voice. They love pontificating on life (their life), and each time madonna comes out with something to promote, she always has a new topic of conversation that she will talk about to death in interview. I dont know how people equate that with her sounding dumb???? To me she always sounds very articulate and opinionated - and i dont think that is something to criticize someone for. It may be calculated and contrived but not dumb.

I guess the nature of being a celebrity means they automatically can't be taken seriously in many peoples minds, particularly someone who has craved celebrity as much as madonna. We're talking about people who seek attention and money over living a normal and genuine life. I mean how much can you trust the sincerity of celebrities who are esesentially all just egotists.

That said, at least she has a fucking point of view. Shes willing to put her neck on the line in every interview. Every word she said is poured over by critics, and in such a situation it would be the easy option to be a Tom Cruise or a Mariah Carey, and give interviews that are of such little substance and such little insight, that there is nothing there to criticize as there is no personality. Madonna is hated by many but that is probably credit to her not choosing this easy option and wanting to promote herself as a person of independent thought and opinion. Whether you like or agree with what she says, you should at least respect the fact that in an age of celebrities wanting to please everyone, she is at least willing to put herself and her opinions out there.

Newsflash: Madonna is a celebrity.Like it or not, people want to know about celebrities and their personal lives.THAT'S why she is talking about it.If there was no interest in what she is doing, you wouldn't see her in magazines and she would be ignored by the media (and by the nearly 800 people who clicked on this thread, lol).

Umm. I've been paying attention to her since '84 and she kinda has. "No comment from the peanut gallery". Watch any of those lengthy interviews from MTV during Don't Bungle the Jungle, Breakfast with Madonna, when Erotica came out, for the Girlie Show. She's always talked this way. People make it out like it's some new thing since she got married. And it's never sounded British to me, anyway. Maybe a bit fake and snobby sounding, but not specifically British.

I've seen Maddy interviews ca. 1985, and she wasn't talking like that. 1985 Maddy would not have been caught dead saying "I caunt take it. Just give me a fahhn" with the sort of pretense that Madonna exhibits today. She would have said it, but the gum would have been smacking along with her wink

to me i don't notice a British accent... i think she sounds the same as she always has. i do wish she'd joke around more. she did a couple years ago with Regis and Kelly and has a little bit with Matt Lauder, and a little iwth Joy Behar on the view but most of the time i don't see her sense of humor anywhere.
