Oh way past that...I even have the unreleased tracks she did with Max Cavelera before he left Sepultura, and some pretty decent quality demo bootlegs of her scrapped duet which was slated to appear on The Marshall Mathers LP (apparently she decided he wasn't "street" enough for her in the end)

Who gives a crap? Music is music. You don't ever hear people wanting to make comparisons between UK and US politicians, or visual artists (OK maybe every now and then).

How can you chose what is best? What's the point? Just enjoy the difference.

Most my collection is american.

Only my now very small amount of brit pop is the only english shit I own (and obvious ones like queen, deff leppard etc)

so I prefer american music.

Occasionally though, u get a huge hit that only the brits would lap up. This year we have had the annoying frog, but also "is this the way to amarillo", which had everyone kids to adults singing

A song like that would never get played in USA, which is why I love british publics sense of humour when it comes to music sometimes. We dont take it seriously.

Lets not also forget america is just a wee bit bigger then Britain. Plus, without the blacks coming over, america wouldn't be shit musically and britain would "win" cool

American for me. Even though some of greatest Rock bands of all time (and many of my personal favorites) are british: the beatles, the stones, the who etc., Rock n Roll is an american art form, and All of the brit rockers' idols and inspirations were americans.

Music is the one respect in which I really do believe american culture is ahead of the rest of the world simply because america is a land of immigrants with a heterogenous mixture of several different cultures, and thus its music is a mixture of several different kinds of music. Each different region of the world has produced music that excells in different ways. European music is the most sophisticated harmonically, while middle eastern and indian music are the most melodically advanced and have the most subtle gradations between notes, and african music is the most complex rhythmically. American music has benefited from all these sources. The combination of west african music ring shouts and drum circles with european elements produced blues, gospel and ragtime which led to jazz which led to R&b and then Rock n roll and Soul. Gaelic folk music mixed with the blues helped create american folk and country. Avant-garde jazz and psychedelic rock (as well as soul music: see the scales of many of James Jamerson's basslines) took a lot of inspiration from indian and arabian music. Funk was created when James Brown reverted back to the roots of R&B and adapted the rhythmic dynamic of afro-cuban/west-african music. All in all, american music is very globally eclectic, and while it has often been said that the music the slaves brought with them is what really vitalized american music (and I think it represents a large, perhaps the largest part), one cannot overlook the influence that the music of all the cultural groups of america has had in creating such a rich protean history of music.

It is too easy to just say that. Lots of American music was inspired by African music, so if you are going to use that as a rule, you should like African music better.

I just love the fact how both countries inspire eachother. I think they are too closely related to make a seperation,e ven though the American market is maybe somewhat more of a publicity machine than the British.

I myself would never be able to make a distinction between the two; my music collection splits in half if I was to divide it in US/UK.
