Z Cult Fave- "Hard To Say I'm Sorry"/Peter Cetera & David Foster "Everybody needs a little time away. I heard her say.". Is this song coldblooded or what? Man, I remember going to see "Summer Lovers" when it came out. I went with a few of my friends and this girl that I was STONED in love with. Man, this girl was so fine, it hurt. I had a jones for her that would not quit. Now, I'm in jr. high, I was having to deal with trying to be cool and get to her somehow at the same time. She was visiting on vacation. Only going to be here for like, two weeks and shit. I had to move it! Up untill that point, I didn't think she knew my heart was in my throat over her. Man, was I wrong! It was probably easy to tell, cuz my eyes stayed glued to her. Anyway, while were walking into the theatre, I'm jockying for position to sit next to her. It worked. All through the movie, she kept bumping into me, leaning all across me, talking to our other friend, the girl she was staying with. Then she would start whispering shit to me about the movie like "God, that beach is so great. I would love to go... Wouldn't you?" "Oh yeahhh" I was able to say. "Well, let's go!" "Yeah, o.k." Or, "God, she's soooo pretty. I wish I could be that pretty. "You're prettier." I couldn't believe that came out of my mouth. Anyway, who else digs this song? SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

This was one of my favorite songs by that Peter Cetera recorded while with Chicago. Just thinking about the melody of this song takes me back to those Jr High (Middle School as they called in my area) days. Somehow for the life of me, I could never figure out why the song ended the way it did so abruptly the way it did with the quick tempo.

I was in 4th or 5th grade when this song came out. I had a classification of music then (that I still reference occasionally) called "old people do it music." Songs like Can't Fight This Feeling and Oh Cherie also were grouped under that billing. This song also fit into that category. More properly it fit into the sub-category, "old people make up music." I was anal retentive even as a child.
I couldn't relate to it at that early an age, so it just seemed so foreign and strange to me. Not the music itself, but breaking up, making up and all the physical stuff that goes along with it. I haven't heard it recently, but generally speaking, I like the song. Like Legs said, I never got the uptempo ending to it. It seemed out of place. [Edited 7/18/05 20:55pm]

They composed it, probably to scenes that where deleted, so it just stayed in the song. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Man,this song is one of my favorites.Chicago is often criticized for their slick 80s adult contemporary singles, but it's hard to dislike a song like this.It was one of the biggest hits of the summer of 82,and yes,I remember the film "Summer Lovers".Haven't seen it in years, but I recall alot of naked people walking around on a beach
btw,I'll be seeing Chicago in concert with Earth Wind and Fire on Sep 3.

I thought for sure more people would be hatin' on this track. I can tolerate early Chicago, but the later stuff with Peter Cetera does nothing for me. Sorry guys.

Pretty much gotten over the hatred based on my perceived Cetera/Foster takeover of Chicago and turn them into a sappy/pop/ballad band conspiracy.
Chicago 16 is pretty much Peter Cetera with one foot out the door. The good part is that there's also Bill Champlin with both feet in the door. Hard To Say I'm Sorry is the beginning of the 80s-Chicago as a pure pop act with no social commentary whatsoever. This must have certainly pissed Robert Lamm (the social conscience of the band) off to some degree. The new era actually peaks on the following album Chicago 17 (one of the only latter day Chicago discs that I own). Stay The Night You're the Inspiration My favorite tune in this category is a song from Chicago 17 that was not a Cetera/Foster collab but one that was skillfully arranged to use the vocal differences of Cetera & Champlin effectively in specific sections of the song - Hard Habit To Break. There are actually some decent Cetera-less tunes on Chicago 17 that feature Bill Champlin and Robert Lamm... We Can Stop the Hurtin' Only You Please Hold On (Bill Champlin/David Foster/Lionel Richie co-writers) Overall though, i'm a Chicago Transit Authority era guy. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. No love for Bill Champlin. I wish he would rearrange the old Sons of Champlin tune Goldmine for Chicago. http://www.sonsofchamplin...d_Mine.mp3 tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. "and if i c david walking by, and the tears are in his eyes, look away must not be played". U know they gonna play that. My dad taped them doing their last hit (i think) called "you come to my senses" on some tv show in 1991. U could see they did not like that song too much I love it though. I love "look away". Diane warren's first big hit. Though the follow up "chasin' the wind" is better. Theaudience, u must get "21". Sure it has corny ballads, but lamm has a couple of cuts to himself, and very good they are too. The sound is not foster like. on "21". The horns and drums came back on that album (on some tracks) The video to "look away" was so 80's, sorta like "i wanna know what love is" by foreigner. Classic
