Edie Falco to Host New Season of PBS's Emmy Award-Winning Series Independent Lens
Tuesday August 9, 4:55 pm ET
Season Premieres on October 11 With Parliament Funkadelic: One Nation Under a Groove

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The Independent Television Service (ITVS) announced today that Edie Falco, Emmy Award-winning star of The Sopranos, will be the host of the 2005-2006 season of the critically acclaimed PBS series Independent Lens. The series airs on Tuesday nights at 10 PM (check local listings).
"I'm thrilled to be hosting Independent Lens because I'm a fan. Every week, this series illustrates the importance of PBS. It's essential that there is a place on TV where we can see films that explore important issues and introduce us to exceptional people and unique stories," Falco said.

Falco follows in the footsteps of past series hosts Angela Bassett, Don Cheadle and Susan Sarandon. Series producer & co-curator of Independent Lens, Lois Vossen said, "I can't think of anyone we'd rather have as our host. Not only is Edie one of the most honored actresses on TV, loved by both critics and viewers, she's also an actress who has always been committed to taking chances artistically, whether it's on stage or in the films of such maverick directors as Hal Hartley, Abel Ferrara or John Sayles. She's been a passionate advocate for true independent filmmaking, a spirit embodied every week on Independent Lens."

The 2004-2005 season of Independent Lens was a knockout, with unprecedented attention from the press, audiences and stations alike. "We have received two Best Documentary Emmy Nominations, for AFGHANISTAN UNVEILED and THE DAY MY GOD DIED, which we aired last season. I think it proves Independent Lens is the place to go for unique and important stories," Vossen said. This season of Independent Lens features another great lineup of independent documentaries and dramatic shorts.

The fall season premieres on October 11th with the broadcast of Yvonne Smith's portrait of funk legend George Clinton, PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC: One Nation Under a Groove, in conjunction with the release of Clinton's latest CD and a national tour.

More information about the upcoming season and Edie Falco is available at http://www.itvs.org/pressroom/.

Although this would be a letdown, I will be happy it's a program on P-Funk!
Last time I saw a show on P-funk was the VH1 legends thang back in '99.
I'll take whatever I can get and be happy. cool

I think the loss of Glen Goins really put an end to the true force of P-Funk. Lord only knows what they might have accomplished had he lived and re-joined the band. By the way they say he died of Hodgkin's but I have always heard "rumors" that drugs did him in before cancer. Anybody else hear that?

George should never had fired him, after Glenn departure it went downhill. It was a joke when the others like Garry where trying to copy Glenn onstage with Swing Down etc. Don't even try!
That's why I prefer a female to sing Glenn's song/parts.

Glenn could have made the 78-81 from Parliament and Funkadelic better with his great singing.

Does anybody know on which songs Eddie sang lead, he was a great singer.?

Agreed.
I think the cool thing about P-funk is the P-funk ethic. George Clinton, Parliament - Funkadelic, P-funk All Stars, all the side projects, the line ups have been and are many. I have my preferences like everyone else. I like to celebrate the fact that there is so much to choose from and it's wide and varied. And good or bad, I'm glad it exists it all it's forms.
And I give it up for G.C and Co. for doing their thang. We should all be so privelaged.
The power of Funk compels me...

Many of those lyrics you consider "silly" are social commentary if you dig deep enough. Have you ever listened to the lyrics of Aqua Boogie? It ain't just about cartoons. Well hidden social commentary. Much of his work is like that. On the surface it seems stoopid but if you dig deeper you see where he's coming from.

Ndeed! from "Aqua Boogie": " With The Rhythm It Takes to dance to what We Have To Live Through, You could dance Underwater and Not Get Wet..."

it's not as overt as it used to be, but the messages are still there, you just have to go deeper...

from "Give Up The Funk(Tear The Roof Of The Sucka)" : "Just Let us in, We'll Turn That Mutha Out"...shoot, think of Tiger Woods in golf, Venus and Serena in tennis, places where blacks were'nt always represented or welcome ...just let 'em in, and "We'll Turn That Mutha' Out!"

....

My boy pali wrote a whole thread regarding Parliament's deep lyrics.

He recorded in England a few months ago, with Ptheory.
On their website you can find this;

A article written by the Goins family, enjoy. cool

Kevin Goins, born in Plainfield, New Jersey (a.k.a P-FUNK) on July 26th. His god-fearing parents Bobby and Jesse Mae Goins raised Kevin with a strong religious background. Kevin starting singing at the age of three with his siblings, Mary, Tyrone, Deborah and Glenn. These singing adventures would include outdoor Christmas caroling, church choirs and school affairs. Kevin was surrounded by singing and instrument playing his entire life. Kevin’s grandma started the talent with her guitar playing which dwindled down to Kev’s dad Bobby Goins, his brother the legendary Glenn Goins and of course to Kevin. His sister Deborah can pluck a tune or two herself. Kevin’s mom and dad are responsible for the gift of his distinctive voice. Family and friends would always flock to the Goins home on family occasions knowing they’d be singing, guitar picking and washboard playing (kevin’s mom).

Kevin went out on his first tour with a gospel group by the name of “Sons of Emmanuel”. The group would do mini tours during the weekends through the small and large churches of the south. While Kevin was still too young to be by the side of his brother, Glenn was out touring with Bobby Womack, Johnny Taylor and later on Parliament Funkadelics, just to name a few. In growing up Kevin was a co-founder of the teenage bands, Lemon Gin and Eclipse , 14 and 15 year olds wood shedding in the Plainfield, New Jersey basements.

Glenn, occasionally coming off the road, discovered how well Kevin and his friends, Eugene “Moochie” Jackson, and Jeff Adams had developed their skills in music, and song. With Glenn as their mentor and musical guide, the group “Quazar” was formed. Glenn recruited a few more members for Quazar, Gregg Fitz, Richard “Shiadi” Banks, Peachena, Darryl “Major D” Dixon, Monica Peters, Darryl de Lomberto and Harvey Banks, all having gospel backgrounds. Glenn started coaching the group for showcases in New York, Montreal, Canada and New Jersey. In their showcases they attracted a great deal of record company attention for their brash mixture of gospel, funk and rock and roll. Lured by a demonstration tape, representative from Arista caught the group live, and within a week they were signed to the label. Clive Davis thought of the group as a powerful attraction and a force to be dealt with.

They were a very young band and didn’t have much professional musical experience behind them, but all had been playing for years. The music of Quazar got their music from God, form the natural key of that they lived in.

Just prior to the release of Quazar, the group was dealt a severe blow with the loss of producer Glen Goins, who died in July 1978 of complications stemming from an earlier bout with Hodgkins Disease. Not only did Kevin lose his producer but he lost his brother, who in essence was his hero. Through great mourning Quazar struggled to keep the group going but the loss was too great. There was a spell of silence and later the group grew dispersed. Everyone to go there separate ways exploring there unique talents in other ventures. In the meantime Kevin did a few gigs and studio work. He did an album with a group by the name of Space Cadets, led by Nairobi Sailcat.

After a few years Kevin put a group together by the name of “Sweat”. This group consisted of yet, more of Plainfield talent and Kevin’s family. The group would practice day and night in the basements of Plainfield. They did a few gigs and showcases in the tri-city area of New York and showcased for Atlantic records. Just before an agreement was made, Kevin made the decision to join a group from California by the name of General Cane. Mitch McDowell leader of General Cane became very fond of Kevin and they began to do a lot of work together.

Kevin and his then fiancée, Gloria Goins , moved to California to pursue his career with the group. Kevin remained in the group for about 5 years signing to Capitol Records and Motown. In the peak of General Cane’s career, their leader was struck down and shot to death in the office of his new Bail Bondsmen business. Yet another great lost in the music world and in Kevin’s world.

Upon returning home Kevin took a sabbatical for a few years, playing in local churches and working with his upcoming and talented nephews who later became known to the music world as “FAMLEE”.

Through a mutual friend and now manager, Barbara Thomas-Johnson , Kevin was introduced to Alex and PTheory and put together some great forces and talents with Alex to create a innovative version of Funk, Gospel, Blues and Rock and Roll.
