got my Santana tickets

Went out yesterday and got some GREAT seats for the Santana concert in my area on September 15.One thing I love about Santana's concerts are the cheap price for tickets....only $65.50!! Even during his 'Supernatural' heyday in 2000,his tickets weren't that much more than $50.That's a bargain compared to other longtime artists/bands like the Eagles and The Rolling Stones. And I even managed to get floor seats. The opening act is a band called Robert Randolph and The Family Band.I've never heard of these guys....are they any good?

Anyway, there is nothing like a Santana concert.Over 2 hours of pure musicianship.Latin,blues,jazz,rock,R&B....it's all there.Carlos has one of the most impressive bands in the business (much props to longtime keyboardist Chester Thompson). And you can bring the entire family to this show. This ain't no dumb Eminem/50 Cent concert, with non-stop cussing,"gangsta" posturing and crotch-grabbing,lol.Btw,the new Santana CD 'All That I Am' will be released on September 6,only a few days before the concert. At recent shows,he's been performing a few new songs from the album ("Brown Skin Girl" and "Roule").

Anyone else going to see Carlos this summer?

I reckon you are going to enjoy Robert Randolph & the Family Band. Quite funky with the pedal-steel.
They opened for Eric Clapton's latest tour (in Europe, not sure about stateside). This is the kind of opener
that has more energy than the headliner - Clapton suffered from it, Santana might.

I would love to see Santana, but judging from his post-Supernatural tours, his shows are kind of dull.
They are aiming too much at that crossover audience that picked up the singles on the radio.
You have Dennis Chambers, Bennie Rietveld and Carlos on the same stage, and slightly hyped
latin-tinged poppy fluff is all they come up with?

This could of course change with the release of All that I am, due september 6th. --- Oh, it's in your post as well giggle

smile

I understand that this will be Supernatural III. Even if it's twice as good as 2002's Shaman, it will still be mediocre at best.

Take it away Carlos:

"‘All That I Am’ is an extension and continuation of a vision co-created by Mr. Clive Davis and myself. We equate what we do with the dimensions of a three-ring circus or a Cirque du Soleil where children, teenagers, parents and grand parents can share unity and harmony in the family of life. We create songs and magic pairing to bring joy and happiness to the listener. Our deepest respect and gratitude to Clive Davis, Pete Ganbarg, Kevin Chisholm and all the artists, writers, producers and engineers."

My favorite Santana concert was in 1995.This was several years before the whole 'Supernatual' hype.He performed a bold, lengthy 3-hour set that didn't feature too many "hits".He noticed that some people in the audience were getting restless (probably yelling out the names of songs they wanted to hear),and he told them "Don't worry...we'll get to the hits later. We got a lot of time".It was an exciting, eclectic show.He ended the show with the big hits that people wanted to hear ("Oye Como Va","Black Magic Woman",etc) but I actually preferred the un-familiar material.

Seems like the kind of show I would like to see from Carlos - which is basically what I
saw on seventies concert-footage. Endless jams, freeforms and good albums to back it with.

I guess I am waiting for him to enter the middle-sized venue market, same goes for Eric Clapton.

in a recent interview,Carlos comments on his upcoming album...

"I feel really grateful, again. This is not a shtick or a gimmick or a formula or anything like that.I'm not doing anything different than what I did when I started in 1967.I immediately started playing with Jerry Garcia,Michael Bloomfield and Peter Green. So when I play with Mary J.Blige,Sean Paul,Joss Stone and Black Eyed Peas (all of whom appear on the new album),it's not a gimmick. As you know,Mick Jagger (2001's 'Goddess In The Doorway'),Lenny Kravitz (2004's 'Baptism'),and Elton John (2001's 'Songs From The West Coast') tried it,thinking it was just a formula to get the same writers and different things. But it didn't work".

lol Carlos is a little cocky at the end of that interview, lol

I hear he is collaborating with George Clinton on a new album: How Far Up Your Ass Do You Have To Be Before
You're Obsolete
. Conveniently, this title will be abbreviated to HFUYADYHTBBYO. Clinton commented:
"This album displays a strong spiritual connection between Carlos and myself. The title is like this big inside joke.
Just like my last two albums, it will never see the light of day."

Carlos could at least admit that he has to play the corporate game to sustain his (major) recording engagements.

Saw Carlos on June 24 here in Toronto. It was a great show. Los Lonely Boys opened for him and they were pretty good. They came out later that evening and did a song with Carlos and the band. It was a sweltering hot night, but it was so appropriate for a Santana concert. He has so many great songs that he can't possibly do all our favourites, but it was a great 2 hour show of pure musicanship. When he plays guitar, he has a sound that can bring tears to ones eyes. Seriously!! I recommend Carlos live to anyone that loves pure sounding music.

Wow,I would love to see Los Lonely Boys too! It's a shame that they're only playing a few dates with Carlos. They should stay for the entire tour.

We got there just as they were coming on stage. I'm glad we didn't miss them as they were quite good. I don't have their cd, but I may get someone to burn it for me. I liked their sound. Enjoy Carlos in Sept. Davideye. I'm sure you will give us a great report.

There are a few; Live at the Fillmore 1968, recorded before their debut, which was issued in 1997,
or Lotus, recorded in Japan in 1973, issued in 1974. If you like Buddy Miles, there is a live album
from 1972. All official releases from Columbia.

Or check some bootlegs for the real fan-experience wink

Santana has released several Live albums throughout the years, but this is the one I recommend that you buy first...

It was recorded in 1993,and it is truly one of his most passionate performances. It's also available on video and DVD.
