Miles Davis: Agharta

I have been really interested in this recording for a long time. I like most of Miles' music and I really like his electric-era, but I have never heard any of his live recordings before. One of my friends told me to check this one out because it was rawer and rougher than Tribute To Jack Johnson. Allmusic.com considers it as "one of the greatest jazz-rock recordings-period". Has anyone ever heard of this one?

I'm very interested in this as well, together with it's
companion piece "Pangaea"

Somehow I imagine it sounding like Prince's "Osaka"
or something similar.

eek

ooh that sounds good. I'm still waiting for my recordstore to get the
new masters though because I hate the package of the old release in a
double box.

I can be fickle like that. Wanting the album for eons now but just not
buying it because the package is not to my liking

I think I heard this one the last time in 1995 or something. Don't remember much of it, was it even a mere bootleg back then?

Heroin? I know this man was on drugs and all, but I never knew he was on that. People say during this recording, he was really sick and his trumpet playing was weak.

I heard Agharta was better than Pangaea!

Wonderfully scary music on the edge. thumbs up!

This is one of a trio of live recordings (Dark Magus, Agharta & Pangaea ) where he was using 2 guitars as the main chordal instruments. Might be the closest example to what many would assume a Miles/Hendrix colab would sound like. This would signal the end of his hyper-fusion 70s period music based on the Bitches Brew template. He disappeared from sight musically for 5 years after these recordings.

He was off heroin by that time... he was doing coke and pills during this period. And yes, the album is amazing!!!! I like it better than Pangea.

In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew are still the best "electric" period albums, if u ask me.

I have Agharta on lp and let me tell it's outta there, it's really up there with Live Evil and Bitches Brew,
I also have Pangaea (cd) (wish I had the lp) it's a good companion to Agharta. i't really shows how Miles was handling his electric period! Both are recommended!

I LOVE this album, I have been playing this for the last few days and it gets better with every spin. The band is ferocious and the live setting really captures the essence of Miles electric phase. It's good to see a thread about this recording. thumbs up!

I'm also thinking of buying both Dark Magus and Live-Evil, in addition to this one. Can anybody talk about those two and how it differs from Agharta because I know just from looking at the Dark Magus album cover that Dark Magus is wild!

Live Evil is in sorts a continuation of the sounds heard on Bitches Brew (very beautiful) and Dark Magus is really wild and chaotic (but very very entertaining)

When I first heard Dark Magus at the age of 16 I thought it was the most bizarre, darkest music ever made. Of course, future expeditions into the wildlife of underground music have altered that assessment, but it's still no background music to be played at a family reunion.

Bitches Brew is a little too strained and long for me, in some ways. But, it is one of the most amazing fusion-jazz albums I've ever heard. Everybody that did fusion music were on that album. Anyways, I've really been looking forward in buying Get Up With It. Can anybody tell me about that one because it's really an outtakes compilation like Big Fun.
