The Essential Sly And The Family Stone cd

I know I'm a little late on this because this cd came out in 2002 but I gotta mention this cd. I have owned 3 Sly Stone cd's for a number of years ("Greatest Hits," "Fresh," and "There's A Riot Goin' On.") I was already familiar with his most essential songs but after reading the Sly Stone article that was recently posted on this forum, I started checking on amazon.com for Sly's entire catalog when I stumbled upon the reviews for this cd, "The Essential Sly and The Family Stone." The reviews basically said that since the music had been remastered and was now in stereo rather than mono, the difference in sound was incredible.

Well, I bought the cd yesterday and I can't emphasize enough how INCREDIBLE it sounds!!! I always liked Sly and the Family Stone but they never were on heavy rotation for me because of the "old" sound. Anyways, the difference is like going from watching a black and white television to all of a sudden watching TV in COLOR AND 3-D! I strongly urge everyone to buy this cd. The music is insanely good....Like a funkier version of the Beatles. And with the improved sound, it sounds like a brand new band that just came out today, not 40 years ago. If you like Prince/funk-rock, no doubt you will love this cd. Classic shit!!!!

If you own his older cd's, I'm telling you the difference in sound IS TOTALLY WORTH buying this cd. As much as I would like to hear the full versions of the cd's that I am missing in my Sly collection, I will not buy them until they remaster them and put them in stereo like they have done on this incredible collection. Plus, pretty much all his essential songs (and then some) are included in this marvellous cd. I hope my little post here can appropriately translate what I'm trying to say. Without Sly there would be no Prince as we know him today. Sly was waaay ahead of his time.

An A+ collection (better than Greatest Hits and Anthology combined). I only wish the booklet had more liner notes as well as some more photos. The sound on this collection just knocked me out. Sony/Legacy better remaster and repackage Stand, There's A Riot Going On, Fresh, Small Talk, High On You, and Heard You Missed Me quick. I'm also waiting for a 5-disc box set too. Overall, this is an excellent anthology!

i like what little bit of liner notes came with the collection, but you're right - there should have been more!

Funny you say this. I bought There's A Riot Goin' On last week and was amazed at the music (much of which I have on the Anthology set) but the sound quality was terrible.

For that reason alone I may get the 2-CD set.

You wont be disappointed , Dave. As you are probably already aware, those "Essential" sets are incredible. While you are at it, they also have great sets in that series for the Isley Bros., Santana and EWF....

Great release.

Since someone had given me a Borders (a place i'd never buy a CD from) gift certificate I bought The Essential Sly & the Family Stone initially because it included Loose Booty.

I already had the Epic Greatest Hits release but it's light tune-wise and sonically compared to The Essential collection

loose booty is the main reason i'll pull out my copy of that compilation. i'll get in a mood to hear that song, then i'll end up listening to the whole two discs over and over.

Yep, apparently Sly himself gave the go ahead...here is a press release:

SLY STONE OK'S COFFEE CHAIN'S TRIBUTE ALBUM

JOSS STONE, STEVEN TYLER and BUDDY GUY are among the stars paying tribute to
reclusive funk pioneer SLY STONE on a new covers album.

Stone granted bosses at US coffee chain Starbucks permission to re-record
classic SLY + THE FAMILY STONE tracks by the musician himself.

Starbucks released the star-studded compilation yesterday (13JUL05) - two
months before Sony chiefs release an expanded version of the album, DIFFERENT
STROKES.

Among the tracks covered are Stone, JOHN LEGEND and VAN HUNT revamping FAMILY
AFFAIR, MAROON 5 covering EVERYDAY PEOPLE and Tyler teaming up with steel
guitarist ROBERT RANDOLPH on I WANT TO TAKE YOU HIGHER.

One track, BLACK EYED PEAS star WILL.I.AM's version of DANCE TO THE MUSIC,
will also be used on the soundtrack of upcoming movie STEALTH.
