You gotta be a real ignorant, egotistical jackass to call yourself John "Legend." Especially with that weak ass, overrated song of his, "Ordinary People." To start calling yourself a legend like that is to show ignorance of the TRUE legends of music. John Legend could try all day and still not be able to "bite" John Lennon (a real legend). If you are a true legend, people will recognize your talent. If you have to TELL people that you are a legend, that right there shows you ain't shit. People are so used to seeing bullshit on MTV that the second they show anyone playing an instrument they are quick to say shit like, "This guy's the next Stevie Wonder or Prince." Gimme a break! A more appropriate name for this dude would have been John Flash-in-the-Pan.

Damn, you are truly telling it like it is! I couldn't have said it any better. How dare someone name theself Legend when they've been around for 3 minutes? Let's see how long his career lasts before we call him a legend.

Exactly.Just remember what happened to Terence Trent d'Arby's career when he was going around comparing himself to the Beatles. That kind of "confidence" can backfire if the artist doesn't live up to the hype.

Thats what some older guy was telling me at work last night. He was like John Legend's song "Ordinary People" was nice but it sounded alot like something by John Lennon, like it was his signature sound. Then he talked about the similarities in their names - John Lennon/Legend. I had explained to him that John Legend's real name is John Stephens, but he got the name "Legend" from somebody else because sung like a legendary R&B singer. But he was like "yeah, but still..."

I got to thinking about, and I know that everybody (especially artists/entertainers) have a doppleganger somewhere in the world. Like the Notorious BIG & Guerrilla Black similarities - look alike, sound alike, same type of stage name, same "CW" initials in their real name, but two different lyrical styles and on different coasts.

What do y'all think about that?

No, if anything "Ordinary People" is nothing more than Stevie Wonder's "Feeding Off The Love Of The Land" in a different tempo and key change.

The man obviously heard this track and was inspired to write this song. It has Stevie's vibe all over it.

I don't like this John Legend guy either.Even before his CD was released,he was bragging in a Vibe interview that it is the best album ever.John is alot like Terence Trent D'Arby...an artist whose massive ego overshadowed whatever talent he had.

Sorry man but you are totally wrong about Sananda Maitreya (formerly TTD). That guy IS a legend and his music is extremely good. Have you kept up with all his music or are you just familiar with "Introducing the Hardline..." album. That guy is EXTREMELY talented, and I'm not just saying that. You should really check out his albums "Wildcard (Joker's Edition)," "Vibrator," and "Symphony or Damn" and you will see what I mean. I think that Beatles comment may have been said joking around and then got blown out of proportion. I have seen some early interview footage on him and he was kinda arrogant when he came out be he long ago humbled himself and besides, that guy really has bucket loads of talent.

nod Agreed. You can't even lump TTD/Sandana with this amature John. Shit, thats a insult b/c Sanadana is a more seasoned musician/vocalist period.

i agree.....but hey, in ten years who knows what john legend would have done....its his first album.....we've already been informed that he *wasnt* the person who named himself "legend".

i dont know..there are many people who say TTD is crap and not talented and a washed up hasbeen...to keep my drawers clean, i just dont even get into the crapping game....

did you know i used to be a bigger TTD fan then Prince...probably still would be if he toured at all.

Yes I can because they are 2 COMPLETELY different people. That's like saying that I can't express my disgust with Britney Spears' music and then defend Stevie Wonder. John Legend just came out the other day and the point I was trying to make is that he has no business referring to himself as a legend, especially when he only has 1 measly album out and the big single from that album was no big deal at all (to put it nicely). Sananda/TTD has been around since the mid 80's, he's about to release his 6th album, his albums are phenomenal, the man sings like an angel and plays bass/guitar/piano/drums, and he's a great songwriter and poet. I don't see how you can say that I can't talk bad about Johnny Come Lately John Legend and then defend Sananda. MTV/VH1 cram John Legend down everyone's throat so I feel it is my right to express that he sucks. I can understand if you feel my opinion is wrong and you don't agree with me, that's perfectly cool, but I don't think you are correct in saying that just because I express my disgust of one person that then I can't defend a TRUE artist.

Okay, point taken. You feel people shouldn't crap on other artist. I kinda agree, but I guess I just don't consider John Legend an artist, more like an artistic creation by the record companies razz .

and thats all it is..a STAGE name. why take such a small thing so seriously when its not. if u dislike an artist, thats cool. but don't hate them because u think they're being arrogant, especially if the arrogance is comming thru in such a small way as a stage name. hell prince was an arrogant twat when he was just starting (american bandstand anyone) i don't see folks pissing on that.

I think it's just that the majority of mainstream music is just so mediocre that John Legend and Alicia Keys seem to get more credit than they deserve.

He's delusional. If I'm not mistaken, John Legend borrowed the chords from Stevie Wonder. That's who he should be compared to.

John Legend and Stevie Wonder were interviewed after the BET awards, where they sung ordinary people together...john legend stated that the song(ordinary people was inspired by My Cherie Amour, and after another listen, i can kinda get that....nothing original i will agree, but it is more digestible than a lot of other crap out there now.

Actually the song is a direct rip of D'Angelo's acoustic version of Africa. For those lucky few that have it compare the two and hear for yourself.

why are so many of you hating on John Legend? I'm sorry, but they guy's album is one of few R&B albums that I can still keep in my car nowadays. I'd rather listen to him, someone who writes or co-writes his songs and can belt it out rather than looking at some teeny bopper who is on the pop tart charts for being a mechanical dancer to songs that he didn't even help write or produce.

I give John Legend more respect than Omarion, Marques Houston, Mario, Bobby Valentino, Mario Winans, or that weezel Nick Cannon. They are all incorporated to push out bullshit for kids still in high school or those who still want to shake their pants off in the clubs.

No he's not Teddy P., Bobby Womack, Charlie Wilson, Rick James, Maurice White, Jeffrey Osbourne, or Stevie Wonder...but he's the best to offer for the music out right now that talks only about sex, more sex, and some more sex.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Yes, please! Before you people start hating on John Legend or any other popular artists who allegedly stole music from other talented artists, you need to check out the PBS documentary, "John Lennon's Juekbox." It shows a collection of songs he owned back in the late 1950's and early 1960's, which was mostly a collection of R&B music by artists who have mostly been forgotten by the mainstream. They have interviews with these artists where they talk about their music and how some of them actually met John Lennon and played with the Beatles just before they blew up into the icons they would become. They talk about how they would compose certain guitar riffs, and then the show intertwines those interviews with taped conversations from John Lennon who explains how he attempted to play those same riffs and then rewrite them into the Beatles music. If you listen to some of these R&B songs, not only do you hear where the Beatles picked up their sound, but the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds/Eric Clapton/Led Zeppelin and the Kinks as well.

im give john legend the benefit of the doubt right now over an alicia keyes because he seems a lot more levelheaded and less pompous....its his first album..i waited to crap on alicia till her second.....

besides, even prince and ttd were called copy cats at first...it took them awhile to build the confidence and skill to be called "individuals". everything on TTD's Hardline can be considered "inspired" from other artist.....

so, lets give him some time before we dismiss him...and at least he doesnt "act" ghetto just to win a fanbase.....like miss *frontin* keyes.
